MARCH 2012 etfsa.co.za MONTHLY SOUTH AFRICAN ETF, ETN AND INDEX TRACKING PRODUCT PERFORMANCE SURVEY Mike Brown, Managing Director, etfsa.co.za 3 April 2012 Short-Term Performance (1 month to 1 year) Products tracking the gold bullion price, namely NewGold ETF and the Standard Bank Gold-Linker ETN remain at the top of the one year performance table provided annual returns of over 30%. However, with the exception of oil - the RMB Oil ETN has a six month total return performance of 23,59% - the more recent performance of commodity based investments has been less outstanding. Sectoral index ETFs, tracking the performance of the industrial, financial and property indices such as the Satrix INDI 25 ETF, Satrix FINI 15 ETF, Proptrax SAPY ETF and the NewFunds erafi FINI 15 ETF, also covering the financial sector, have been the stand out performers over most of the recent periods measured. Although Emerging Market ETNs, such as the DBX Tracker Africa Top 50, China and Emerging Market ETNs, have been good performers over the 3 to 6 month periods, in the past 30 days, Developing Market ETFs, such as DBX Tracker USA and DBX Tracker World ETF funds have provided the best total return performance. Medium to Long Term Performance (2 to ) The Satrix INDI 25, Satrix DIVI Plus and Satrix RAFI 40 Total Return ETF, have remained at the top of the 3 year performance tables, indicating the good recovery in the JSE over this period. Only NewGold ETF has broken into the domain of equity based passive tracker funds over the longer term measurement period. The full etfsa Performance Survey is attached. The etfsa Performance Survey measures the total return (Net Asset Value (NAV to NAV)) changes including reinvestment of dividends) for index tracking unit trusts and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) available to the retail public in South Africa. The performance tables (attached) measure the 1 month to total return compared with the benchmark index returns (including reinvestment of dividends). Note, as the FTSE/JSE calculates the index without taking into account any brokerage or other transaction costs, index tracking products will typically underperform the index because of their transaction and other running costs.. 1
