FUNDZ JULY SEPTEMBER 0 For Private Circulation Only

Index Dear Readers, Greetings! The first quarter of 0 started of with a strong pick up of the Indian economy from the last quarter. After registering a.% growth in 0, and being the best performing country in South Asia, major global financial organisations are picturing a growth rate of.%.% for the next fiscal year as well. On the global front, the recovery in the commodity markets as well as the development in the financial markets across the globe, continued until the decision of Britain to leave European Union came. The equity prices declined worldwide immediately after the Brexit vote. Although, the prices have regained since then, yet the global growth forecasts have been cut especially for UK and other European countries. The monsoon rains have galloped the entire country since the month of June. An above normal monsoon is expected this year, which comes in as a boon after two years of drought. Better monsoon will result in an increased production of Kharif crops and pulses, this will bring down the foodgrain inflation in the country. An increase in rural income will boost consumption and will alleviate the cost of government on drought relief and other rural sector upliftment programmes. The Cabinet has approved the th Pay Commission recommendations in the month of June. An additional Rs Lakh crore will flow into the economy, it will increase the disposable income in the hands of the customers and will boost consumption. It will also be beneficial for consumption oriented sectors like automobiles and consumer durables, and will largely contribute to savings and investment, thus pushing GDP growth. Liberalisation in FDI limits, a good monsoon and other domestic reforms has enabled our country to stand still even after Brexit, which has disturbed the financial health of the entire world. Things are going good for India and the future is looking even better. International News G0 pledge to boost trade despite growing protectionism The world's top 0 economies will work to boost sluggish global trade despite growing protectionism, overcapacity concerns, and uncertainty over Brexit, G0 trade ministers said at a meeting in SHANGHAI. The global recovery continues, but it remains uneven and falls short of our ambition for strong, sustainable and balanced growth. Downside risks and vulnerabilities persist, the trade ministers said in a joint statement, adding that trade should remain an important engine to spur global growth. The G0 nations, which account for percent of global trade, admitted that protectionism has been rising since the financial crisis, and said that new trade restrictions in the group had reached the highest monthly average registered since the WTO began monitoring in 00. Brexit, discontent in Western countries likely to pave way for "Asian Century": Experts Britain's vote to leave the European Union and simmering discontent in other Western countries is seen as hastening the arrival of an "Asian Century", analysts say, led by the rise of China and India. By 00, Asia will account for over half the world's GDP, almost double that of 0, according to the Asian Development Bank, with three billion newly affluent citizens. The EU and other powerful collectives such as the United Nations, TO, IMF and World Bank hark back to the postworld War II era, with a vision of cooperation leading to peace, prosperity and security. But the churning currents of globalisation and institutions reluctance to reform have left Asian nations feeling that they are not wellrepresented and looking to form new alliances. Soft Chinese inflation, grim global outlook point to more stimulus Soft Chinese inflation and G0 concerns that the global recovery remains grim are hardening views among some economists that more government stimulus will be needed to support China, the world's secondbiggest economy. Consumer inflation last month remained under the official target of around % for this year, indicating persistently weak domestic demand. The consumer price index (CPI) rose.% in June from a year earlier, compared with a.0% increase in May, China's National Bureau of Statistics said. Analysts had expected a.% gain, a Reuters poll showed. June hiring surge of,000 suggests rebounding US economy Employers shook off two months of weak hiring by adding,000 jobs in June, a robust pace that suggests a resilient US economy recovering from a slump early in the year. The hiring spurt marked a sharp improvement from May's dismal showing, when only,000 jobs were added, and April's modest gain of,000. The unemployment rate rose in June from. per cent to a stilllow. per cent. The job growth will also raise hopes that the US economy, which has repeatedly defied overseas weakness before, may be able to further strengthen even as the rest of the world slows. Equity Market HIGHLIGHTS Global equity markets exhibited volatility amidst rebound in crude oil prices, status quo by Fed on interest rates and downward revisions for 0 global growth by IMF. The developed markets represented by MSCI AC World Index outperformed their emerging market peers. Indian equity markets started the quarter on positive note with an above average forecast for monsoons, improving PMI numbers, significant recovery in high frequency indicators such as auto sales, consumer credit growth, Fed rate hike concerns and expected change of the RBI governor. The markets rallied post the Brexit event on account of domestic triggers of th Pay Commission and good monsoon, thereby closing the quarter with robust gains, S&P BSE Sensex and Nifty 0 recorded.% and.% respectively. Debt Market HIGHLIGHTS Globally, government long bonds saw a rally in the June quarter on account of heightened risk aversion and a resultant flight to safety as UK's citizens polled in favour of exiting the European Union. Long maturity government bond yields fell across the developed economies including Eurozone, UK and emerging economies like Brazil and Asia. Indian bond yields has been relatively resilient to external volatilities over the past quarter in comparison with other EM long term bond yields including Brazil. A rise in the inflation numbers during the quarter, wobbly industrial data along with concerns over declining overseas participation in the Indian debt market hardened the bond yields during most part of the quarter. The RBI kept policy rates unchanged in its second bimonthly monetary policy review. Inflation trajectory is projected to be around % by January 0. Systemic liquidity remained comfortable during the month on inflows from government's spending and fund infusions by the RBI through Repo auctions and open market operations. MF News Mutual Fund assets hit record Rs. lakh cr in June quarter Mutual fund industry's asset base rose.% to an alltime high of `. lakh crore in AprilJune quarter helped by strong participation from retail investors and robust inflow in equity schemes. The industry, comprising of active players, witnessed increase in average assets under management to `. lakh crore in three months ended June 0, 0, from `. lakh crore during JanuaryMarch quarter, data available with industry body Association of Mutual Fund Industry (AMFI) showed. Among the top five players, ICICI Prudential led the pack with asset base of `,, crore followed by HDFC (`,, crore), Reliance (`,,00 crore), Birla Sun Life (`,,0 crore) and SBI MF (`,, crore). Growing participation from retail investors, huge inflows in equity schemes led to increase in the industry's assets base, market experts said. Besides, inflows into systematic investment plans (SIPs) for equity schemes have been rising. Fund managers add new companies to portfolios Mutual fund (MF) managers are expanding their investment canvas by bringing more companies into their portfolios. On the back of robust inflows from domestic investors, they are trying out relatively unknown companies in order to broadbase their allocations. With more than a fourth of equity assets finding place only in selective bluechip stocks, it is increasingly becoming essential for fund managers to find stocks that can help them generate better returns. Companies like Omkar Speciality Chemicals, Excel Crop Care, Automobile Corporation of India, Hatsun Agro Products, Greenlam Industries, Starlog Enterprises, Eimco Elecon, Wheels India, SMS Pharmaceuticals and Summit Securities have been picked up by top fund managers, according to a report from Edelweiss on India's mutual funds. Small fund houses focus on equity assets Quite a few of the smaller fund houses are focusing on expanding the assets under management (AUM) in equity. Motilal Oswal MF has raised its equity AUM to about `,000 crore from around Rs 00 crore three years earlier. In the same period, Mirae Asset MF and BNP Paribas MF have raised equity assets by about Rs,000 crore each, from a small base of around ` 00 crore. Canara Robeco MF, IDBI MF and LIC MF have increased their equity assets by a little more than `,000 crore. Different strategies have worked for different players. For instance, Motilal Oswal changed its positioning from being a predominantly exchangetraded fund player to getting involved in active fund management a few years before, said experts. Mirae refocused on sales and distribution. BNP Paribas has benefited from the performance of its schemes, especially its midcap fund. Despite the challenges, a focus on equity assets can pay off in the long run as these are a lot stickier than debt assets and can generate higher revenue. Palakkad, Daman beat Mumbai, Delhi in new mutual fund investor growth rate People from small towns such as Palakkad, Daman, Asansol and Imphal are investing in the capital markets through mutual funds at a faster pace than the wellheeled residents of metros including Mumbai and New Delhi a trend that may deepen the local financial markets and reduce dependence on overseas investors. Sale of mutual fund schemes in the smaller cities and towns have grown % in two years compared with a % increase in the top cities, according to the Reserve Bank of India's Financial Stability Report. The number of folios in B cities (outside the top ) increased to.0 crore in March from. crore two years earlier, while they rose to. crore from. crore in the top cities. PSBs lag private peers in embracing MF sales India's public sector banks, despite a vast network of branches, continue to lag behind private peers in selling mutual fund products to investors. Poor earnings from sale of mutual fund products is a clear indication of their inefficiency. And this comes at a time when investor's awareness about mutual funds is on the rise, given the significant growth in flow of money from retail clients. For instance, State Bank of India, the country's largest lender, with nearly,00 branches across the country, could earn Rs crore only by way of commission from sale of mutual fund products in 0. On the other hand, private lenders HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank together pocketed Rs 0 crore in the year. Interestingly, the total network strength of these four private banks is,00 branches, 0 per cent less than that of SBI and a fourth of all the branches of top PSBs.
