MRA End of Year Get-Together The Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) celebrated its Annual Get-Together at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre (SVICC) on Wednesday 20 December 2017. The End of Year celebration started as from 11h15 and the Director-General of the MRA, Mr. Sudhamo Lal, welcomed all MRA staff who were present at the SVICC. In his address, he underlined that it is comforting to meet the MRA Family in a relaxed and soothing atmosphere and he wished that 2018 bring more happiness and prosperity in the lives of all MRA staff. The Get-Together was sprinkled with short quizzes for MRA staff, live performances and shows by local artists, namely Laura Beg, Alain Ramanisum, Bhojpuri Boys, Denis-Claude Gaspard, RDx Dance Group and Ani-keith Teeluckdharry. The Masters of Ceremony were Vedita and Jenny. The dance floor was open as from 15h00 and the Get-Together ended at around 17h00. 2

Illicit Financial flows Workshop A two-day workshop was organised by the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) and the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) on Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 December, 2017 at the MRA Custom House. The Director-General of the MRA, Mr. Sudhamo Lal, welcomed Mr. G. Ollivry, Director Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), and Mr. L. Wort, Executive Secretary of the ATAF, for the launching ceremony of the work on Monday 11 December 2017. In his address, Mr. Sudhamo Lal outlined the importance of such workshops and stated that the MRA is committed to providing its support to ATAF in hosting same. The aim of the workshop was to share best practices on detecting and combating illicit flows of money with participants of the 2 nd Cohort Executive Master s in Taxation. Illicit financial flows are perceived as a direct threat to development and it is important to train human resources on how to uncover and prevent the illicit flows. Mr. P. Olomo and Mr. R. Atindehou, of Ethiopia and Zimbabwe respectively, were the two resource persons of the workshop and they were assisted by Ms. C. Bertchtold, Project Manager at ATAF. 3

Executive Master s in Taxation Click here to watch video Fifteen participants completed the second leg of the Executive Master s in Taxation (EMT) in Mauritius and an official closing ceremony was organised at the Custom House on Wednesday 13 December 2017. Mr. Sudhamo Lal, Director-General of the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA), Mr. L. Wort, Executive Secretary of the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF), Mr. P. Olomo of the African Union Commission and Mr. B. Atindehou of the African Capacity Building Foundation were present for the closing ceremony. The EMT is run by the ATAF, in collaboration with the École National d Administration of Senegal, the Université Alioune Diop de Bambey and the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA), for francophone African countries. In his address, Mr. Sudhamo Lal underlined that training of human resources is one of the strategic objectives of the MRA and that the EMT is testimony of the growing regional collaboration between the MRA, the ATAF and other partners. Mr. Wort urged the participants of this second cohort to make the most of the EMT course. The participants of this cohort of the EMT were from Benin, Cameroun, Mauritania, Mauritius, Niger, Tchad and Togo. Double Tax Agreement with Egypt A delegation of two officials from Egypt was at the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) Head Office from Monday 11 to Wednesday 13 December, 2017 in the context of the first round negotiations with regards to an Amending Protocol in the tax treaty between Mauritius and Egypt. The Mauritian delegation comprised Mr. M. Hannelas, Director Large Taxpayer Department (LTD), Mr. R. Ramloll of the State Law Office, Mr. Y. Veerasamy of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MOFED) and Mrs. A. Sobarun of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade. Mr. Hamed, Head of the Egyptian delegation, and Mr. Sawy participated in the negotiations. At the close of the negotiations, it was agreed that negotiations on the Amending Protocol will be pursued. CCTV Surveillance: MRA signs MoU with AML, MPF On Tuesday 26 December, 2017, the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports of Mauritius Limited (AML) and the Mauritius Police Force (MPF) at the AML Head Office at Plaine Magnien. The MoU encompasses the CCTV Surveillance System in place at the SSR International Airport and it defines the roles, responsibilities and obligations of the signatories. The aim of the MoU is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the operation and management of the CCTV Surveillance System. The MRA was represented by Mr. V. Ramburun, Director, Customs and the other representatives were Mr. R. Bhoyroo, CEO of AML and Mr. K. Jhugroo, Deputy Commissioner of Police. The SSR International Airport Passenger Terminal is equipped with CCTV Surveillance System since 2013 and it operates on a 24/7 basis. 5

MRA brings smiles to children of Bambous The Mauritius Revenue Authority offered lunch to children of Bambous on Tuesday 12th December 2017. The initiative is part of MRA s Corporate Social Responsibility and it was organised in the context of Christmas. The MRA was represented by Mr. M. Hannelas, Director Large Taxpayer Department (LTD) and he was assisted by staff from LTD and the Taxpayer Education and Communication Department (TECD). Mr. Hannelas pointed out that the initiative testifies the contribution of the MRA to the economic and social development of Mauritius and, most importantly, to make the children smile. 6
