S&P 500 Index One-Year Point-to-Point Interest Crediting Strategy For fixed index annuities A fixed index annuity (FIA) may be part of an appropriate strategy to help you retire on your own terms. FIAs provide the ability to receive interest credit based, in part, on the performance of an index and provide protection against market-based losses. When considering a fixed index annuity, it is important to evaluate the product s available interest crediting strategies, such as the S&P 500 Index, and to determine which strategy or combination of strategies works best for your specific retirement goals. What is S&P? Standard & Poor s (S&P) has been providing indices and credit ratings for more than 150 years. Its indices are relied upon by investors of all types to gauge the overall health of financial markets. The S&P U.S. Indices are a family of equity indices designed to measure the market performance of U.S. stocks trading on U.S. exchanges. The family is composed of a wide range of Dow Jones U.S. equity indices based on size sector and style. The S&P 500 Index (Large Cap), S&P MidCap 400 Index and S&P SmallCap 600 Index together comprise the S&P Composite 1500. S&P 500 Index The S&P 500 Index provides equity exposure to large-cap U.S. companies (generally those with a market cap of $6.1 billion or greater) for portfolio diversification. It is considered one of the most common benchmarks for the broader U.S. equity markets. It is a market-cap-weighted index of the 500 largest publicly traded companies in the U.S. by market value. However, it is also a floatweighted index, which means company market capitalizations are adjusted by the number of shares available for public trading. Additional considerations when purchasing an FIA: Fixed index annuities are typically meant for long-term savings purposes. They are insurance contracts, not registered securities or stock market investments. You are never invested in the index itself. Interest is credited based on the performance of the index and the criteria outlined in the index crediting strategy. The S&P 500 Index was created in 1957 and was the first U.S. stock market index based on market capitalization. Today, there are more than $2.2 trillion in assets associated with the index and more than $7.8 trillion benchmarked to the index, capturing 80% of total available market capitalization. S&P 500 The S&P 500 one-year point-topoint strategy with either a cap or performance trigger credits interest to a fixed index annuity contract value at the end of each strategy term. You do not invest directly in the index. What is a cap? The cap is the highest rate of interest that will be credited to a fixed index annuity for the strategy term. Caps are declared in advance and guaranteed for the oneyear strategy term, but may change for future strategy terms. Caps will never be less than the Minimum Guaranteed Annual Index Cap described in the contract. What is a trigger rate? The trigger rate is an interest rate that is established at the start of the interest crediting period and credited as long as the Index return is positive. Trigger Rates are declared in advance and guaranteed for the one-year strategy term, but may change for future strategy terms. Trigger rates will never be less than the Minimum Guaranteed Annual Trigger Rate described in the contract. FIA1281 3
How the S&P 500 Index Works In order to be included in the S&P 500 Index, companies have to be listed on a U.S. stock exchange. At least 50% of a company s shares must be available for trading in order for it to be included in the index. These must be highly tradable common stocks. Also, the companies must have positive earnings reported over the most recent four quarters when added together. The S&P 500 Index is rebalanced on a quarterly basis in March, June, September and December. The S&P U.S. Indices are maintained by the U.S. Index Committee, which consists of full-time professional members of S&P Dow Jones Indices staff. The committee meets monthly. At each meeting, the Index Committee reviews pending corporate actions that may affect companies included in the S&P 500 Index, statistics comparing the index to the market, companies that are being considered as candidates for addition to the index and any significant market events. Some of the top-weighted companies included in the S&P 500 Index are: Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Berkshire Hathaway, JP Morgan Chase, Exxon Mobil, Alphabet (Google parent) and Johnson & Johnson, just to name a few. The top sectors included in the S&P 500 Index are information technology, financials, health care and consumer discretionary (which includes companies like Amazon) and energy. FIA1259
