EMI = P r(1+r)n (1+r)n 1 where: P=principal loan amount r= annual interest rate / 12 n = number of monthly installments called the principal amount of the loan. To figure out the amount of interest I would pay during the five years, or the additional money I would be charged to borrow the $7,500, I used a simple interest formula, or a formula to calculate interest paid only on the principal amount. Using this formula, I found that the amount of interest on the loan was $3,750. After making payments for those five years, I ended up paying $11,250 for my first car ($7,500 principal + $3,750 interest). Principal amount applies to more than just loans. It can also apply to money that is invested or deposited into an account. For example, if I open a savings account with a $700 deposit, the principal amount is $700. Principal Amount Formulas
In the example above, we wanted to find out how much interest would accrue on a loan amount of $7,500. What if we already know the interest rate, amount of interest, and amount of time but need to find out the principal amount? We can rearrange the interest formula, or I = PRT to calculate the principal amount. The new formula would be P = I / (RT). Formula to solve for principal amount Let's take a look at an example: Find the principal amount of a loan that has a total interest amount of $18,500 and an annual interest rate of 6.5% over 12 years. To solve this we substitute the values into the equation, P = I / (RT). This gives us P = $18,500 / (0.065 * 12) = $23,718. The principal amount of the loan is $23,718. We can follow the same process for other interest formulas. By solving the formulas for P, we can use them to calculate the principal amount.
