CONCLUSION on 31 st December 2007 Income until 30 June 2008: USD 339,979.96 Expenses until 30 June 2008: USD 172,746.70 Balance: USD + 167,233.26 FINAL COMMENTS IUGS for 2008, signed the contact with UNESCO for IGCP for USD 48.000. The remain amount of USD 42.000 for IGCP will directly transferred by UNESCO to the field offices. We received this communication in June 2008, after approving the budget in Marrakech Bank Interests were: 15.531,00 USD IUGS recovered the amount of 31.081,00 USD as fees for previous years. New member: Lesotho. Ivory Coast, Senegal Tunisia and Ukraine became Active. Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia upgraded their category from 1 to 2. Czech Republic and South Korea upgraded their category from 2 to 3. Denmark upgraded their category from 3 to 4. UK upgraded their category from 7 to 8. Situation of Adhering Organizations: ACTIVE INACTIVE TOTAL 93 (88 in 2007) (83 in 2006) (77 in 2005) (79 in 2004) 26 (30 in 2007) (35 in 2006) (40 in 2005) (37 in 2004) 119 (118 in 2007) (118 in 2006) (117 in 2005) (116 in 2004) IUGS expenditures often do not reflect the real costs. Our annual contribution of USD 23,000 to EPISODES for editing, lay-out, printing and distribution, is relatively small in comparison with the actual costs incurred by the Chinese Ministry of Land and Resources which hosts the Journal. The same holds true for the costs related to IUGS meetings, which are covered, at least in part, by the countries hosting such meetings and for a very substantial part by the parent organisations of the Bureau members (President, Secretary-General and Treasurer and their supporting staff) which cover salary and all their travel costs. These forms of support save IUGS more than USD 100,000 per year. A comparable amount is further saved by IUGS having been given the continuous generous contribution of the Norwegian government to fully financially support the IUGS Permanent Secretariat in Trondheim. IUGS is extremely grateful to the Chinese, the Norwegian, the Canadian and the Italian governments for this generous support that enables the Union to invest significantly more in science development than would be otherwise possible. 13
