Alpha Asset Allocation Asset Change Auditor Benchmark Beta Bias Correlation Current Assets Custom Portfolio Indexed Account A measure of the difference between a fund's actual monthly excess return and its expected monthly excess return, which in turn is based on that fund's sensitivity (beta) to the excess return for the benchmark index. The investment allotment of a designated fund's holdings among different kinds of assets, such as stocks, bonds and cash. The change in net asset value of a designated fund since the previous month or year. A fund Auditor serves as an independent check on the fund management. The auditor examines and reports on a fund's internal controls, financial and operational issues, providing assurance to the shareholders. A standard against which the performance of a security, index, mutual fund or investor can be measured. Beta is a measure of a fund's sensitivity to the market movement. The benchmark portfolio has a beta of one. A fund with beta greater than one is riskier than the benchmark and a fund with beta smaller than one is less risky than the benchmark. The fund manager's bias toward Large, Medium or Small cap securities. A statistical measure of how two securities move in relation to each other. Correlations are used in advanced portfolio management. Correlation is computed into what is known as the correlation coefficient, which ranges between -1 and +1. If the correlation is 0, the movements of the securities is said to have no correlation, it is completely random. The Management Expense Ration, or MER, is the aggregate of all expenses related to the fund operation, including management fee, custodian fee, transaction fee, etc. on a percentage basis over the net asset value of the fund, excluding any UL Fee. A number assigned to an Account within an AIG Life of Canada universal life policy. An individual or company with direct responsibility for investment decisions relating to assets of an investment fund. Fund type classification based on the Canadian Investment Funds Standards Committee, such as Canadian Equity, U.S. Equity, or Canadian Bond. The Fundata FundGrade is a mutual fund rating system that is based upon independent measurement of risk, performance, and consistency. A fund must be strong in all three areas relative to its benchmark and to its peers in order to receive a good grade. The best selection would be an "A" fund. The investment allotment of a fund's holdings among different countries. An investment account that credits interest for a fixed term (similar to a GIC). The group of assets--such as stocks and bonds--held by an investor. In the case of designated funds, the investor would be the designated fund itself. No securities or assets are held in a UL plan. Management Fee Market Indexed Account Managed Indexed Account Managed Portfolio Indexed Account Performance Portfolio Manager R-squared Sector Allocation Sharpe Sortino Standard Deviation The management fee is a certain percentage deducted from a fund's net asset value to pay the fund manager. Often the percentage declines as the fund's net assets grow. An investment account that credits interest in the amount mirroring the percentage change in value of a specified market index (ex. Standard & Poor's 500 Index or TSE 60 Index). An investment account that credits interest in the amount mirroring the net rate of return of a designated fund managed by a Canadian mutual fund company or other fund manager. An investment account that credits interest in the amount mirroring the net rate of return of a fund portfolio. Shows Daily, Simple, Calendar, Compound and Monthly returns. Also shows quartile ranking. The management company responsible for the overall fund strategy, as well as the buying and selling decisions of the securities in a fund's portfolio. A statistic to measure the percentage of a fund's movements that are explained by the movements of its benchmark. An R-squared of 100 means the portfolio performance is 100 percent explained by its benchmark. The higher the R-squared is, the higher the reliability of beta. The investment allotment of a fund's holdings among different sectors, such as Financials, Utilities, Health Care, etc. A measure of risk adjusted performance. It is the ratio of a fund's excess return (return - risk free rate) to its standard deviation. A higher Sharpe ratio is normally preferred. This indicates a higher return for the amount of risk demonstrated by the fund. Similar to the Sharpe Ratio, but instead of using standard deviation as the denominator, it uses Downside Deviation. A measure of risk which takes a fund's monthly return over a certain period, and calculates the average deviation from the mean. Style Tax Efficiency Top Holdings Treynor Universal Life Insurance Volatility The approach that the fund manager is taking for choosing investments. Can be either: Value (looking for situations in which the book value of the company is close to or exceeds its market price) Growth (seeking out growth companies in which earnings are expected to grow at an above average rate in the future) Blend (uses a combination of Value and Growth), or Sector ( choosing from a sector that they feel will outperform the overall financial market). The percentage of the after-tax return over pre-tax return. A list of a fund's top holdings as a percentage of total assets. A measure of risk adjusted performance with the assumption of a well diversified portfolio, which only contains market risk. It is the ratio of a fund's excess return to its Beta or market risk. A higher Treynor ratio is normally preferred. This indicates a higher return for the amount of market risk demonstrated by the fund. A permanent insurance plan that combines life insurance protection and a tax-deferred investment account. A statistical measure of the dispersion of returns for a given security or market index. Volatility can either be measured by using the standard deviation or variance between returns from that same security or market index.
