HELSINKI TOURISM STATISTICS June 2016 Bednights up 5 per cent In June 2016, 353,000 overnight stays were recorded in Helsinki, of which 13,000 were spent by domestic visitors and 215,000 nights by foreign visitors. The biggest group was U.S. residents, almost 28,000 bed nights (+ 62 %). Reasons for the significant growth of Americans were international events held in Helsinki, such as ICANN Meeting, an international convention for Jehova Witnesses and EuroGames Event. All in all, bednights were up to 5 per cent compared to the June of last year. Bednights spent by Finnish visitors decreased by 3 per cent and those of foreign visitors grew 12 per cent. In June 2016 the number of bednights in Finland was 1.97 million (- 2 %), of which Finns accounted for 1.43 million (- 4 %) and foreign visitors for 536,000 (-4 %). Overnight stays by Russian visitors totalled for 48,000 (- 23 %). Up in June USA + 62 % Denmark + 30 % China + 27 % Austria + 26 % France + 15 % Down in June Poland -33 % Switzerland -11 % Nights spent by business travellers increased Of the total number of bednights in accommodation facilities, 166,000 (47 %) were for business purposes and 187,000 (53 %) leisure. Bednights spent by business travellers grew 17 per cent and bednights by leisure travellers decreased by 3 per cent from a year earlier. Accommodation facilities received 203,000 visitors, which is 5 per cent more than a year previously. Finns accounted for 89,000 (- 4 %) and foreign visitors for 114,000 (+ 14 %). Visitors arriving from Russia totalled a little less than 6,000 (- 31 %), when Chinese totalled more than 8,000, over 43 per cent more than June 2015. Accommodation turnover EUR 27 million Accommodation turnover in the area rose by 14per cent and was EUR 27 million. The average price of a bednight in June 2016 was EUR 77,39 euroa (+ 8 %). Tax-free sales decreased by 31 per cent Tax-free sales in Helsinki decreased 31 per cent, while in the entire country tax-free sales decreased 39 per cent. Tax-free purchases by Chinese visitors decreased 28 per cent and by Japanese 2 per cent in Helsinki. Tax-free purchases by Russian visitor in Helsinki were 56 per cent lower than a year earlier, when the decrease in the entire country was 52 per cent. Air traffic up 4 per cent The number of passengers at Helsinki Airport in June was 1.59 million (+ 4 %). Of these 196,000 (- 0,8 %) took domestic flights while 1.39 million (+ 6 %) took international flights. 658,000 people arrived by ship In June, 658,000 passengers arrived in the Port of Helsinki (- 2 %). Of the passengers, 432,000 came from Estonia (+ 3 %), 113,000 from Sweden ( -6 %) ja 24,000 from Russia ( + 66 %). Passengers arriving from Germany totalled almost 9,000 ( + 3 %). Cruise ships brought 81,000 travellers (- 18 %) to Helsinki in June. 1
