Entry criteria SAIS Membership and Board Examinations The entry criteria to sit for the SAIS Membership and Board Examinations are as follows: Those with the following qualifications: B.Com (Hons) or B Com (Investments); (Accounting); or (Economics) Chartered Accountant (South Africa) [CA (SA)] Chartered Financial Analyst [CFA] Those who have completed any other degree AND the one-year SAIS recognised course Programme in Investment Analysis & Portfolio Management at UNISA. [Credit will be given for an SAIS recognised equivalent one year course at an approved South African University provided the course covers all the identified subjects]. Registration for Investment Advice & Portfolio Management, Finance and Taxation (Investment, Finance & Tax) examinations. 1. Candidates are not eligible for any of the Investment, Finance and Tax courses or examinations unless they have registered for Rules I or Rules II or have already passed Rules I and/or Rules II. 2. The objectives of the Investments, Finance & Tax Examinations are to assess the candidate s knowledge as it relates to stockbroking in South Africa. The test should be challenging, comprehensive, fair and most importantly relevant to someone wishing to practice as a South African stockbroker. As we are part of an international investment community it will also attempt to recognise current global best practice in investment management and financial reporting. 3. Exemption to subjects will be granted as follows: Investment Advice & Portfolio Management examination. Anybody who is a fully qualified Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), [but not to anybody who has only passed one or two years CFA]; or a B.Com (Hons) (Investments), with the appropriate majors. Finance examination. Anybody who is a fully qualified CFA; or a fully qualified Chartered Accountant (South Africa) [CA(SA)]; or has an accounting degree with Accounting III. Taxation examination. Anybody who is a fully qualified CA(SA); or has an accounting degree with Taxation III. 4. The examinations will be held as follows: Investment Advice & Portfolio Management Mon, 13 Nov 2017 Taxation Mon, 20 Nov 2017 Finance Mon, 27 Nov 2017 The Act, Rules & Procedures: Parts I & II Mon, 4 Dec 2017 Registration for examinations closing date (remains) : 13 October 2017 The Investment Advice & Portfolio module examination will be three hours in duration. At least fifty per centum of the total marks will be allocated to the practical investment question. Candidates must achieve a pass mark for this question plus an aggregate pass mark for the whole examination in order to obtain credit for this subject. The balance will be short answers. The practical investments question will be in the traditional format of responding to a client s needs and requests. The short questions will test the broader knowledge of investment theory and management. The Finance and Tax module examinations will each be two hours & 15 mins in duration and will include both long and short answers. 5. Registration Registration for studying courses and registration for the examination can be done together or separately. Lectures Please indicate on the registration form if you would like to attend lectures. Should enough candidates indicate interest, SAIS will make arrangements to provide lectures in the evenings. There will be a fee for lectures for each of the three modules, which, unfortunately, will only be held in Sandton, Johannesburg. It is advisable to attend lectures, if in Johannesburg or surrounding area. 7. Study Notes Study notes will not be available for these three modules, as there are prescribed text books and/or publications However if lectures are given, then the lecture presentations of these three modules will be made available to non-lecture attendees for an additional fee for each module. 8. Lectures and Study Notes The SAIS reserves the right to change or reschedule scheduled lectures when it deems it necessary, without prior notice. No refund will be made in respect of lecture fees paid when the candidate does not attend lectures (scheduled or re-scheduled) for any reason what so ever. 9. Syllabi The syllabus is included with the first lecture of each of the three subjects. If you are not registering for the lectures or the study notes a copy will be forwarded to you on request, once updated. The syllabi will usually be covered in prescribed text books/publications which will be advised to all registered candidates. 10. Current Legislation Please note that lectures and study notes are revised each semester to ensure that they contain the up to date references to the prescribed text books and / or legislation. Where applicable, lectures and study notes are also revised each semester to ensure that they contain the latest amendments to the Act, Rules, Directives and any related legislation included in the syllabus. Study notes acquired from previous examinations are used at the candidates peril.
