Chair s Report to the Membership: In honor of GLCU s 80th Anniversary, I would like to read an Order of Proclamation sent to GLCU by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation: WHEREAS, The Great Lakes Credit Union, Charter #0494, was founded March 2, 1938. THEREFORE, On March 2, 2018, the Eightieth Anniversary of its founding will be celebrated. The credit union was established for the purposes of encouraging thrift among its members, creating a source of credit at a reasonable rate of interest, and providing an opportunity for its members to use and control their own money in order to improve their economic and social conditions. The celebration of this anniversary would not have been possible without the dedicated service of the Directors, Officers, Committee Members and Staff. I, FRANCISCO MENCHACA as DIRECTOR OF THE DIVISION OF FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS and on behalf of GOVERNOR BRUCE RAUNER and the STATE OF ILLINOIS, do hereby congratulate the Great Lakes Credit Union on its Eightieth Anniversary and grant this Certificate in recognition of the 80 years of dedicated service to its members. A little history & perspective 80 years ago, GLCU was organized by William E. Elliott, the President of Local 167, National Federation of Federal Employees, with an uncomplicated concept: to create a financial institution which put the best interests of the members first, allowing civil servants to borrow money at reasonable rates, and have a safe place to save for the future. When GLCU was established, there was no financial institution in the local area, and in those early days, civil servants were paid in cash. GLCU s Treasurer set up a desk at the end of the government disbursing officer s pay line to collect deposits and loan payments from members. The day s receipts were then placed in that tin Cash Box, and at the end of the first year, GLCU had a whopping $2,677 in assets. GLCU ended 2017 with nearly $797 million in assets. GLCU ended its first year with 127 members in 2017, GLCU ended the year with over 86,000 members. We ve come a long way! But our commitment has not changed. As GLCU moves forward into 2018, and our next 80 years, we continue to be focused on providing innovative, convenient and affordable products and services to our members, all while being committed to giving back to the communities we serve. We sincerely thank you for your continued loyal support of GLCU. James A. Fabrie Board Chair
