Investors will hold steady until the minutes of the Federal Reserve meeting are released and more clarity emerges around the trade conflict leading into the G20 summit, said ANZ analyst Daniel Hynes. Gold prices have lost over 10 percent from their April peak as investors turned to the dollar as a safe haven with the trade war unfolding against a backdrop of higher U.S. interest rates. CRUDE OIL: Oil prices fell on Tuesday, depressed by record Saudi Arabian production even as the kingdom tried to persuade other exporters to agree output cuts ahead of an OPEC meeting next week. Saudi Arabia raised oil production to an all-time high in November, an industry source said on Monday, pumping 11.1 million to 11.3 million barrels per day (bpd) during the month. Leaders of the G20, the world s biggest economies, meet on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, with the trade war between Washington and Beijing at the top of the agenda. U.S. President Donald Trump has put pressure on Saudi Arabia, OPEC s defacto leader, not to cut production, but most analysts expect OPEC to start withholding some supply soon. U.S. EQUITIES: Around 5:05 a.m. ET, Dow futures dipped 10 points, indicating a negative open of -43.24 points. Futures on the S&P 500 were indicating a downbeat open of -6.20 points, while Nasdaq futures signaled a negative open of -29.09 points. Global investors appear to be digesting recent comments made by President Donald Trump. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. leader said that it was highly unlikely that the U.S. would delay from a tariffs increase to 25 percent, in regards to $200 billion worth of Chinese goods. U.S. DOLLAR The dollar index, which measures the dollar s value against six other major currencies, rose 0.2 percent to 97.28, its highest level in almost two weeks. The U.S. dollar rallied on Tuesday after U.S. President Donald Trump said that he would push ahead with tariffs on Chinese goods, fuelling concern about a Sino-U.S. trade war and boosting demand for the greenback. The threat of an escalating trade conflict between the world s two biggest economies is a major source of concern for next year, amid expectations that the world economy could slow. Commodities Corner Glossary of Terms Relative Strength Index (RSI): The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a popular oscillator used by traders. The name "Relative Strength Index" is slightly misleading as the RSI does not compare the relative strength of two securities, but rather the internal strength of a single security. A more appropriate name might be "Internal Strength Index." The RSI is a fairly simple formula, but is difficult to explain without pages of examples. The Moving Average Convergence/Divergence indicator (MACD): is calculated by subtracting 26-period exponential moving average from 12-period exponential moving average. A 9-period dotted exponential moving average (the "signal line") is automatically displayed on top of the MACD indicator line. The Stochastic Oscillator: is based on stochastic mathematics. It compares where a security's price closed relative to its trading range over the last x-time periods. The Stochastic Oscillator always ranges between 0% and 100%. A reading of 0% shows that the security's close was the lowest price that the security has traded during the preceding x-time periods. A reading of 100% shows that the security's close was the highest price that the security has traded during the preceding x-time periods. The Stochastic Oscillator indicates an oversold state below 20% and an overbought state above 80%. Bollinger Bands: is a type of envelope developed by John Bollinger. Bollinger Bands are plotted at standard deviation levels above and below a moving average. The moving average generally taken is a 20-DMA, while the standard deviation count is 2. This is a very good to gauge both the general direction and the volatility. 5
