Why measure progress? Is life getting better? This is the most important question we ask ourselves as a society. The answer is a complex interaction between governance, economic, social and environmental aspects of life. While the concepts of progress and happiness are related, they are not the same thing. 3
Why measure progress? SGS has examined if life in Sydney is getting better over the past decade. We have examined over 50 different statistical series for Sydney, New South Wales and at times Australia. To provide context to the data we present a time series or comparison to Australian or Melbourne/ Victoria. 4
Why measure progress? The indicators can be loosely associated with one of the four broad domains (governance, economy, society and environment). No weighting has been placed on any the indicators. Every person has a different weight they would place on each indicator. Even for a particular person these weights may change over time. 5
Why measure progress? The following slides present much of this data and provide a quick summary of our assessment of Sydney s progress. Improvement in the indicator No clear progress has been observed Decline in the indicator 6
