Area Unit Demographic Profile 2013 census This profile provides basic population and demographic information on the residents of the Hauraki District. Population and demographic information is important for targeting and delivery of Council services, facilities and resources. 1230728 1

Hauraki District Area Units 1230728 2

Introduction This profile has been produced to assist with decision making in the Hauraki District. By taking local statistics into consideration when making decisions Council can better assess the circumstances and needs of the community. This profile provides data on 8 variables: Access to the Internet Access to motor vehicles Home Ownership Household income Employment Income Source Highest Qualification Family Type These variables have been included in the Profile because they relate closely to the nine variables used in the New Zealand Social Deprivation Index (NZDep2013). The NZDep2013 ordinal scale ranges from 1 to 10, where 1 represents the areas with the least deprived scores and 10 the areas with the most deprived scores. A value of 10 indicates that the geographical unit is in the most deprived 10% of areas in New Zealand. The NZDep2013 reflects a continuum from 'least deprivation' to 'most deprivation', rather than from 'affluence' to 'deprivation'. This was intended, as all the variables in NZDep2013 reflect a lack of something. Please note however that the following New Zealand Statistics data is not directly comparable with the NZDep2013 data because that data excludes some age groups (aged over 65 years and under 18 years of age) for certain variables. The NZDep2013 data is also age/sex standardised. This Area Unit Profile supplements the Hauraki District 2013 Demographic Profile #1209180. Access to the Internet As of the 2013 census, Statistics New Zealand replaced the question about access to any phone at home with the question about access to the internet at home. Over 67 percent of households in Ngatea, Ohinemuri and the Hauraki Plains have access to the Internet, compared with 63.4 percent of households in Hauraki District. Turua has the largest population with internet access (76%). In New Zealand 77 percent of the population have access to the internet at home. Kerepehi has the largest population with no internet access (49%) followed by Paeroa (46%), Kaiaua (44%) and Waihi (43%). Access to the Internet New Zealand 77% 23% No Access Access 1230728 3

The Hauraki District has 14.4 percent of population with access to three or more motor vehicles. Statistics for the median household income do not separate Whiritoa into its own Area Unit. The table above shows both the average and median household incomes for each Area Unit. The average/mean is calculated by adding the sum of all the quantities together and dividing the total by the number of quantities. The median represents the midpoint of a distribution, e.g. 50% of households earn more and less than the median figure. The median household income is considerably lower in New Zealand than the average household income. This is also reflected in the Area Unit statistics. 1230728 11

The unemployment rate for each Area Unit is outlined in the table below. Unemployment rates are calculated by adding together the number of people in the total labour force (includes both unemployed and employed) and dividing it by the number of unemployed. Not in labour force includes any person in the working-age population (aged 15 years and over) who is neither employed nor unemployed. For example those people who are retired, undertake unpaid housework or childcare, attend educational facilities, are permanently unable to work due to physical or mental disabilities and are not actively seeking work. Unemployed means all people in the working-age population who during the reference week were without a paid job, but available for work, and had either actively sought work in the past four weeks ending with the reference week, or had a new job to start within the next four weeks.
