We see it as a very important tool to help us and our clients control claim costs in the future. MIGA s Risk Management Program was the first of its kind introduced in Australia and we believe it remains at the forefront of risk management initiatives in the medical indemnity insurance industry. Your insurance with MIGA provides you free access to our Risk Management Program which offers an exciting variety of support materials, resources and activities to support your practice. The Risk Management Program materials and activities can be accessed online or as part of a virtual classroom from anywhere in Australia. Risk Management Program activities attract either 5 or 10. When you complete a single 10 Point activity or undertake two 5 Point activities we ll provide a discount of 10% off next year s premium with MIGA. MIGA understands the importance of providing a framework to assist Eligible Midwives to plan and undertake appropriate risk management education to enhance the safety and quality of the care you provide. Summary Participation The Risk Management Program is compulsory for all Eligible Midwives under The Midwife Professional Indemnity (Commonwealth Contribution) Scheme. Dates The Program runs annually from 1 April to 31 March Activities All activities are worth 5 or 10 each: College CPD The Australian College of Midwives may allocate CPD points for MIGA activities. You can mix and match activities as shown to suit your own circumstances Complete 2 activities MIGA Workshop Attend interactive Workshops offered online. You can complete 2 REO Modules in the Program Practice Review Complete a Practice Self-Assessment and then make an improvement based on the results. Workshops MIGA Workshops are based on our claims experience. Workshops provide an interactive forum for discussing clinical and professional risk issues and preventative strategies. Case examples, practical exercises and risk management tips are provided. Duration Two hours Participants must be present for at least 90 minutes in order to earn Risk Management. Attending 2 Workshops or 1 Workshop and completing another activity will earn you a premium discount Modules MIGA offers self-directed and self-paced learning options through interactive online Modules. Each involves a combination of learning materials, case studies, videos, resources and assessments. Awarded automatically on the date of submission Submitting 2 Modules or 1 Module and completing another activity will earn you a premium discount Completion REO» Modules Register REO» Events Action Plans During an MIGA Workshop or a Module, you may identify a risk or a gap in your practice or processes. An Action Plan is used to address and reduce that risk. Tell us what the risk is, how you are going to manage it, and most importantly how you will measure its effectiveness. Any improvements you make must be linked to the topic covered in the Workshop or Module and be a step towards reducing your risk of a claim or complaint. Restriction An Action Plan can only be completed once a Workshop has been attended or a Module has been submitted. Accredited Activities MIGA accredits workshops and seminars offered via professional associations such as Colleges or Associations that provide continuous professional development. Accredited Activities must be focussed on medico-legal or clinical risk management and be comparable to a MIGA Workshop with regard to focus, intensity, duration, interaction and resource materials provided. MIGA does not accept applications directly from attendees. If you are attending education provided by a College or Association, encourage the organisers to seek accreditation from MIGA before the event. Restriction You can only receive for one Accredited Activity per Risk Management Program Are awarded on the submission of an acceptable Certificate Certificate Submission REO» Accredited Activities MIGA Practice Self-Assessment Evaluate your current practices through a process of self-assessment and making an improvement. Improvements must be a step towards reducing your medico-legal risk. Are awarded on the submission of an acceptable Action Plan Stage 1 Complete a Self-Assessment of your practice using one of the tools available (pre-requisite for Stage 2) Stage 2 Identify an area for improvement based on your Self-Assessment result and document this improvement on the Action Plan and submit it. Terms and Conditions Participation in MIGA s Risk Management Program is subject to the following terms and conditions: Dates The Risk Management Program year runs from 1 April until 31 March the following year. The next period of insurance commences on 1 July after the Risk Management Program ends. Phone 1800 777 156 (National freecall) Email reo@miga.com.au Jane Clark Administrative Officer Activities All Eligible Midwives insured with MIGA can complete any of the activities All activities must be booked or completed online in accordance with these terms and conditions Activities must be completed between 1 April and 31 March to be considered for Risk Management in the corresponding Risk Management Program year All stages of a single activity must be completed in the same Risk Management Program Activity to be eligible for You must participate for at least 90 minutes of a two hour session in order to be eligible for Risk Management You can only receive Risk Management for one Accredited External Activity per Risk Management Program year You cannot routinely repeat a Workshop or Module topic and be eligible for Risk Management Risk Management cannot be brought forward from a previous, nor carried over to a future, Risk Management Program year. Discount You are only entitled to a premium discount in next period of insurance if you: Achieve the required Risk Management in the Risk Management Program year, and Maintain professional indemnity insurance with Medical Insurance Australia for the next period of insurance The number of Risk Management needed for a discount is 10 per Risk Management Program year, whether you are working part-time or full-time Any discount will only apply to the Medical Insurance Australia insurance premium for the next period of insurance and not to other charges that may apply such as membership fees, taxes, levies, stamp duty or ROCS. If you: Cancel or fail to renew your insurance in next period of insurance, no discount will apply Change your part-time/full-time status or amend your practice category to a different indemnity level, the discount in next period of insurance will be applied to the new premium.
