NOTIFICATION OF INTENT If you are planning to leave a gift to Cardiff Metropolitan University in your will, this form will allow you to notify us of your intentions. We completely appreciate that your will is a very personal matter and so would like to reassure you that your information will be treated sensitively and will be held in the strictest of confidence. Pledging your support is not legally binding in any way as you will always have the freedom to change your mind. We would simply like the opportunity to thank you and keep you updated with our work as one of our valued and loyal supporters as well as to discuss any specific wishes you may have that are associated with your gift. Please tick if you would like us to contact you by: MAIL TELEPHONE SMS Name: Address:.. Telephone: Signature: Date:...
At present, I intend to leave a gift in my will to Cardiff Metropolitan University I would like my gift to support: If you would be happy to share the approximate value of your intended gift, please do so here: The general work of the University Scholarships and Bursaries Research Campus Facilities and Resources Other (please specify) My gift will take the form of: A residuary legacy of all, or part of my estate A specific sum of money or item of value Other At present I am undecided and would like to receive a call from a staff member at the University to discuss further the idea of giving a gift in my will. Please return this form to: Development and Alumni Relations Office Cardiff Metropolitan University Llandaff Campus, Western Avenue Cardiff, CF5 2YB developmentoffice@cardiffmet.ac.uk
SUGGESTED WORDING FOR YOUR WILL INSPIRE A Below are some examples of wording that can be discussed with your solicitor in helping you to draw up your will. These can be, and should be adapted to suit your individual needs and are only intended as a point of reference. SPECIFIC OR PECUNIARY BEQUESTS I give to Cardiff Metropolitan University, CF5 2YB (Charity Number ) free of all tax and duties the sum of (In words and figures or the specific item to be given) for its general charitable purposes (or your preferred area) and I further direct that the receipt of the Secretary or other proper officer of the University shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my executors for the said legacy. RESIDUARY BEQUESTS I give to Cardiff Metropolitan University, CF5 2YB (Charity Number ) (enter the word all or fractional share) the residue of my estate for its general charitable purposes (or your preferred area) and I further direct that the receipt of the Secretary or other proper officer of the University shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my executors for the said legacy.
HOW TO AMEND YOUR WILL You can amend your will at any time by adding a codicil. Below is an example of suggested wording: I... (full name) of... (full address) declare this to be a first (or second or third) codicil to my will dated... (date of will in words) which I make this... (current date in words) I leave to Cardiff Metropolitan University, CF5 2YB (Charity Number ) a pecuniary legacy of... In all other respects I confirm my said will. We strongly encourage you to consult a solicitor, accountant or any other professional advisor before making or amending your will. They will be able to give you advice on the types of gifts and bequests that can be made by you, based on your wishes and financial circumstances. It is important to ensure that the following clause is inserted, whichever wording you need to use: If at my death any charity named as a beneficiary in this will or any codicil hereto has changed its name or amalgamated with or transferred its assets to another body then my Executors shall give effect to any gift made to such charity as if it had been made (in the first case) to the body in its changed name or (in the second place) to the body which results from such amalgamation or to which such transfer has been made.
TAX ADVANTAGES As a registered charity, Cardiff Metropolitan University is exempt from inheritance tax meaning that the University will not pay any tax on gifts of money or property made in your lifetime or after your death. Any person leaving 10% of their taxable estate to charity will qualify for a reduced rate of inheritance tax, from the normal level of 40% to the reduced rate of 36%. Using this basic example based on an amount of 100,000, you can see that leaving 10% to charity will leave your other beneficiaries more than if you were to leave 9% and make no difference if you were planning on leaving 4%: % of taxable estate left to charity 3% 4% 9% 10% Inheritance Tax rate 40% 40% 40% 36% Amount beneficiaries due 58,200 57,600 54,600 57,600
