To use the Data Retrieval Tool, complete the following steps:

1 The Financial Aid Office is required to confirm income information on select FAFSA applications. Here are options for providing this information directly from the IRS to the Financial Aid Office. The quickest way to review your income information is for you to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to transfer tax information directly from the IRS into your FAFSA. For your privacy, tax information you transfer from the IRS into your FAFSA form will not be visible to you. Instead, you will see Transferred from the IRS in the appropriate fields on fafsa.gov, the IRS DRT web page, and on the Student Aid Report. The IRS Data retrieval Tool is unavailable for students/parents who: filed Married Filing Separately, are married and filed Head of Household, filed a Puerto Rican or foreign tax return, or who do not have a FSA ID. If the IRS Data Retrieval Tool is unavailable due to your situation, skip to page 2 for instructions on obtaining a 2015 Tax Return Transcript PDF or paper copy by mail. To use the Data Retrieval Tool, complete the following steps: Go to fafsa.ed.gov and select the Returning User button Log in using the student's: name or FSA ID Select the Make FAFSA Corrections button Select the "Financial Information" tab from the top of the page Instructions for the parent to request the parent IRS information: 1. Go to "Parent Financial Information" page 2. Answer the questions in the first box to see if you are eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool 3. If eligible, determine which parent is providing information on the FAFSA 4. Enter the FSA ID for the parent providing the information 5. Click "Link to IRS. This will open up a different webpage 6. Review the information displayed and select the Transfer My Information into the FAFSA option Instructions for the student to request the student IRS information: 1. Go to "Student Financial Information" page 2. Answer the questions in the first box to see if you are eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool 3. If eligible, click "Link to IRS" 1

2 4. Review the information displayed and select the Transfer My Information into the FAFSA option 5. Proceed to the Sign and Submit page In order to request a 2016 Tax Return Transcript PDF, you need an IRS.gov account. To create an account, you must have either (1) a credit card, mortgage or home equity loan, home equity line of credit, or car loan; AND (2) a mobile phone with your name on the account to verify your identity. If you do not have one of the above lines of credit AND a mobile phone with your name on the account, you can request the 2016 Tax Return Transcript by Mail (see page 3). 1. Go to irs.gov and under Tools, click Get My Tax Record 2. Click on Get Transcript Online 2

3 3. For first time users, click create account and follow instructions for creating an IRS.gov account. You will need your full name, , birthday, Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN), tax filing status, and current address, in addition to a text-enabled mobile phone and a financial account in your name as listed above. The process takes about 15 minutes. 4. Once your account is created and authenticated, select Higher Education/Student Aid as the reason you need a transcript, and click go 3

4 5. Click 2016 in the Return Transcript box 6. If successful, a PDF of your 2016 Tax Return Transcript will pop up on your screen. Make sure you have ad blockers disabled 1. Go to and under Tools, click on Get My Tax Record 4

5 2. Then click on Get Transcript by Mail 3. Fill in the requested information. Note: The street address must be typed in exactly as it appears on your 2015 tax return 5

6 4. Once you have entered your personal information you will be brought to this screen. Select Return Transcript and 2016 in the tax year then click continue 5. The confirmation screen will appear once you have successfully requested your transcript. Please allow 5-10 days to receive it at the address listed on your 2016 tax return 6

7 You can call to request a Tax Return Transcript. Follow the phone prompts and enter the appropriate information. A tax transcript will be delivered to the address of record within 5-10 days. If you are unable to obtain a Tax Return Transcript via the methods above, you can request a Tax Return Transcript by mailing IRS Form 4506-T. The form is available here: 1) Please fill out the form carefully with the appropriate information. Do not have the transcript mailed directly to Cal Poly. 2) On question 6, write the tax form number for the form you filed in Check the first box on the right (option A) for the return transcript. 3) On question 9, write 12/31/2016 for the 2016 tax year. 4) Sign and date the bottom of the form. 5) If you lived in California when your 2016 tax return was filed, you can fax the form to (855) or mail form 4506-T to: Internal Revenue Service RAIVS Team Stop Fresno, CA If you lived in another state, refer to form 4506-T for where to mail the form.
