Banking News Estd SEPTEMBER, 2015 NEWS BULLETIN from ALL INDIA BANK EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION For a greener planet, please don't print this unless necessary Workers at elite banks like ICICI, HDFC might just take the strike route! BUSINESSINSIDER INDIA, BUREAU SEP 4, 2015,. Trade unions are now gauging the resentment of New Private Banks' workers over working conditions and wages. Private Banks like ICICI, HDFC, Axis Bank, etc have come under trade
unions' radar and the two major national trade unions in the banking sector - the All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA) and All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) - are meeting workers. AIBEA leaders finalised a plan in Bengaluru to enroll members from New Private Banks. Private banks enjoy a market share of 20% and employ over a lakh with no effective labour laws. "In the last few months, we have been in regular touch with employees of New Private Banks such as ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank etc who have major issues with working conditions," AIBOA general secretary S Nagarajan told ET. Nagarajan added that employees are made to work very long hours daily and there is disparity in salaries of top-rung and middle rung officers and staff. "The fact that we have our TU and members in Vysya, Bank of Rajasthan, Lord Krishna Bank does help reach out to employees of New Private Banks with which those old private banks merged. That is how we could mobilise support of sections of the New Private Banks for Wednesday's strike," AIBEA vice-president Vishwas Utagi, who is also general secretary of Maharashtra State Bank Employees Federation, told ET. Banking Services Hit by Day-Long Strike MUMBAI NEW DELHI SEP 02, 2015 Banking services across the country were hit today by the day-long strike by 10 central trade unions and 14 bank unions, but workers of largest lender SBI and a few other banks stayed off the agitation. While an RBI spokesperson said the central bank's unions did not participate in the strike and "there was no impact on the clearing operations", its staff at some centres, including in the National Capital, joined the strike. The 14 bank unions, counting a membership of over 10 lakh heads (excluding close to 3 lakh SBI employees) extended their support to the
day-long protest against what they call the anti-labour and anti-public sector policies of the government. Employees and officers from 24 public sector banks, 11 private sector banks, nine foreign banks, 56 regional rural banks, 650 cooperative banks, employees of Nabard and Sidbi joined the strike. All India Bank Employees Association General Secretary C H Venkatachalam told PTI that over half of the 10 lakh banking sector workers supported the strike. Impact was more visible among the lower level staff. Banks said only clearing of cheques was affected. "The strike was majorly supported by workmen. Most of our branches worked normally. There was a partial impact," Dena Bank executive director R K Takkar said. Nation's largest lender SBI's employees stayed away from the strike. "We were not on strike. All our employees worked normally today," SBI deputy managing director and CDO Ashwini Mehra said. Venkatachalam said that besides PSU banks SBI and Indian Overseas Bank, private sector lenders ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and Yes Bank did not join the agitation. While clearing business was affected across the country, banks had fully stocked the ATM machines. Private sector banks which joined the stir included Federal Bank, Karnataka Bank, Karur Vysya Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Catholic Syrian Bank, Dhanlaxmi Bank and Ratnakar Bank. Venkatachalam said that banking sector has joined the stir to protest against central government's anti-labour and pro-corporate policies. Bank unions said the strike paralysed the entire banking system and disrupted all major related activities. "We were successful today. We will continue our protest against the government plans to privatise public sector banks and hand them over to corporates," an office-bearer of the All-India Bank Employees Association said, adding they were also opposed to the entry of payments banks.
For these Arunachal Pradeshis, the nearest bank is 80 km away PTI ITANAGAR, SEPTEMBER 4: For the 15,000 people of Chayangtajo, inclusion in the financial system will take a while longer Establishment of a bank branch at Chayangtajo, an ADC headquarters in East Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh, still remains a distant dream for the 15,000-odd people who have to travel at least 80 km for banking. More than two decades have passed since a bank branch was set up at Seijosa on June 26, 1986, but Chayangtajo was deprived. Our people are suffering a lot due to absence of bank. They have to travel 80 km to Seppa, the district administration even for small transactions. The area with four circles and 12 subdivisions has many important establishments, including an independent PWD division, Vivekanada Kendra Vidyalaya and Don Bosco school, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Ashok Tojo said. The State-level Banking Committee (SLBC) during a meeting on June 21, 2011, decided to establish banks in all unbanked blocks in the State.
The RBI, through its subvention scheme, had proposed to open a bank at Chayangtajo and sought information on availability of infrastructure and other facilities from the Deputy Commissioner of East Kameng, but surprisingly the proposal was withdrawn later. Health and Family Welfare Parliamentary Secretary Karya Bagang, who represents Chayangtajo constituency, has in several representations to both Central and State Government authorities pleaded for early establishment of an SBI branchbut her efforts haven t paid off yet. Chayangtajo is a fast developing hub with many developmental programmes and government departments coming up. It is not possible for MNREGA job card holders in two blocks, Pipu and Chayangtajo, to come down to Seppa, the district headquarters, to meet their banking needs, Karya said in her letter to Sanjay Kumar Magoo, Chief General Manager (North-East circle), SBI. Tara Bagang, a senior citizen of the area, said that with many upcoming power projects in the area, establishment of a bank branch at Chayangtajo is a prerequisite, while former All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) President Kanu Bagang said that without a bank, the people of the area, especially the labourers, are facing a tough time. The SBI official, in a letter to Tuki, has assured that the bank will open a branch in that area in the second half of the current financial year. NEWSPAPER HEADLINES ON 2 ND SEPT.
