1 Costing Trends - Alberta Asphalt Cement (Edmonton Rack $C/t) The Edmonton rack price for asphalt cement averaged $730 per tonne in May, compared with $655 in April. In May of last year, the rack price index was $650. Diesel Fuel (Retail price $/litre) According to NRCan, diesel fuel retailed in Calgary for $1.262 per litre in May, up from an average of $1.224 in April. In Edmonton, diesel prices averaged $1.248 in May compared with $1.205 a month earlier. Inflation (CPI) Alberta s annual inflation rate was 2.6% in May, up from 2.3% in the 2 months prior. 3 Labour Market Conditions Employment Total employment in Alberta seasonally adjusted (SA) increased in May by 37,300 positions yr/yr. On average so far in 2018, the number of people working has increased by 1.8% over the first 5 months of Unemployment Rate The jobless rate (SA) in Alberta decreased in May to 6.2% in May from 6.7% in April, representing the lowest level since August The unemployment rate in May of last year was 7.8%. Avg. Weekly Earnings Statistics Canada`s average weekly earnings (SA) in Alberta increased in March by 2.7% yr/yr to $1,149. In response to a tighter labour market, AWE levels after 3 months this year were up on average by 3.2% from the 1 st quarter of P a g e
4 Employment Insurance Claimants EI recipients (SA) in Alberta declined in April by 5.1% month-over-month (mo/mo) to 56,320 beneficiaries. The average number EI claimants so far this year has fallen by 28.2% from January to April Alberta Net Migration Total net migration into Alberta from all sources during the 1 st quarter was double a year prior to 8,500 persons. From January to March this year, Alberta had positive net interprovincial migration (+1,862) for a third successive quarter, following two years of net losses to other provinces. 4 P a g e
5 Costing Trends - Canada Lumber & Wood Product Prices The Canadian price index for lumber and wood products increased in April by 4% from a year earlier. After 4 months in 2018, this StatCan index was up on average by 5% from January to April Fabricated Metal Product & Construction Material Prices Prices across Canada for construction materials and fabricated metal products increased in April by 3.8% yr/yr. For the year-to-date, this component of the Statistics Canada Industrial Products price index was up on average by almost 4% from the first 4 months of last year. Energy & Petroleum Products Prices The energy and petroleum products price index in Canada increased in April by 15% from year-ago levels. 6 Financial Indicators Mortgage rates The 5-year posted (qualifying) mortgage rate stood at 5.34% in May, up from 5.14% in April. The qualifying 5-year rate has increased 35 basis points since the end of Exchange Rate ($US in $C) The US dollar averaged $1.29 Canadian in May, up from $1.27 in April. However, the C$ has been losing ground in June. In May of last year, $1.36 Canadian was required to purchase $1 US. 6 P a g e
7 Development Building Permit Values Total building permit values (unadjusted) in Alberta increased in April by 29% yr/yr to $1.23 billion. Residential permit values increased 16% to $738.1 million while non-residential intentions surged by 55% to $491.5 million. Housing Starts Total housing starts in Alberta s urban areas of 10,000+ increased in May by 11% from a year-ago levels to 2,870 units. This was the best month for builders since November For the year-to-date, total starts in cities have decreased by 3% from the first 5 months of 2017 to 10,362 units. 7 P a g e
8 Economic Indicators International Exports Alberta Alberta s exports ($ value) decreased slightly mo/mo in April but were up by 9.4% yr/yr to $9 billion. After 4 months this year, total exports were up by 6.3% from January to April Manufacturing Shipments Alberta Alberta s manufacturing sales (SA) decreased in April 5.3% mo/mo due to reduced petroleum shipments caused by refinery shut-downs. So far this year, total shipments have increased in value by 4% from the first 4 months of 2017 to $24.1 billion. 9 Drilling Rig Activity - Alberta There were 67 drilling rigs were active in Alberta on average in May, up 10% yr/yr. According to the CAODC, the number of active rigs so far this year has averaged 3% higher than during the first 5 months of Capital Spending Oil & Gas Extraction Industries - Canada Capital expenditures for the oil and gas extraction industries in Canada amounted to $10.6 billion in the 1 st quarter, down 12% from the previous quarter.
