: The Short-Run Tradeoff between Inflation and Unemployment PASS is an active learning environment and safe space where answers are not judged or graded Don t feel afraid to collaborate and share your knowledge with your classmates! Bring: Textbook, Worksheet, Computer & Writing Materials! Opener Review from Last Week (10 Minutes) What are the core concepts covered in last week s PASS session? For this I have prepared a tictac-toe activity with nine questions. The team that gets three X s or O s in a row wins! Understanding the Phillips Curve (15 Minutes) What is the Phillips Curve? Paul Samuelson and Robert Solow dubbed the term Phillips Curve to describe the negative relationship between and. is significant because it offers policymakers a menu of possible economic outcomes. Example 1: Assuming that ADD, ASS, and Phillips Curves are unit elastic show the effect of a 500 reduction in aggregate output (due to a decrease in investment) on the unemployment rate and inflation rate in the short-run?
Example 2: Assuming that the ADD curve is unit elastic show the effect of a 1000 units of output increase, because of an increase in government purchases, on the unemployment rate and inflation rate in the long run? *Remember Monetary Neutrality Idea! Let s Practice! Questions 2 & 3 Page th Edition: Graphs Below for your Convenience
Adverse Shocks in ADD/ASS and the Phillips Curve (15 Minutes) Example 1: Suppose that a government restricted the production of oil and natural gas in the aggregate. Show the short-run and long-run effect on unemployment and inflation due to the reduction in oil and natural gas production?
Example 2: Suppose that the government decides to mitigate the adverse effect on the Phillips Curve in the above question. How might the government mitigate the increase in inflation and unemployment due to stagflation? Show in the graphs below the effects of the government s policy on ADD, ASS, and Phillips Curve(s)? Then explain the implications this policy has in relation to the sacrifice ratio and Okun s law; and, how would this outcome be different under a rational-expectations model? Explain Implications in relation to sacrifice ratio, Okun s law, and rational expectations model:
Term Review Session Do you know macroeconomics? (20 Minutes) Now that PASS is ending after this week for I am allocating this time in the workshop for a course review of macroeconomics. Either we can discuss questions/topics you had trouble with in the course; or, we can take a look at past worksheets and see if there are any activities/topics that you are not familiar with and we will cover them collaboratively! Use Space Below to Work-out Problems During the Review Session: Closer Effective Studying Methods (10 Minutes) Given that your exam is on April 18 th, 2018 what are some effective studying methods for macroeconomics? How do you study? Are you able to explain macroeconomics to a five year old (this is a good one as it shows if you understand the material)? Take Note, Mock Take-Up Sessions! Thursday, April th 2:30pm to 4:30pm (ME 3328) Friday, April 13 th 11:00am to 1:00pm (ME 3328) Mock Office Hour: Monday, April 16 th 10:00am to 11:00am (ML 402)
