Membership & Salary Survey To promote for the public benefit, education in the scientific and technical aspects of petroleum exploration
In November 2014 the PESGB once again conducted a Membership & Salary Survey. Approximately ten percent of the membership (606) participated in the survey; significantly more than in 2009 when 463 members completed the online survey. The survey seeks to define who we are, where we are, and how we are paid. By completing the survey, the members can not only see how they are placed in the market, but also gives guidance to the PESGB Council for the planning of events and services for the membership. 3 Membership Survey Demographic Profile The proportion of female membership is approximately 19 percent, however the proportion has increased 30 percent amongst the younger members who have joined the industry post Fig. 1 The age of the membership is shown in Figure 1. The graph shows the bimodal nature of the membership with a peak in membership in the population aged 45-60, and a second peak in the age group when the industry increased recruitment in line with high oil prices post Figure 2 shows the employment location of the membership. Half the membership are based in London and SE England and a further 20 percent in Aberdeen. This is virtually unchanged since the last salary survey in Over 80 percent of the membership are based in the UK. Employment Location Fig. 2 PESGB Membership Survey 3
Demographic Profile: Aberdeen & London Education Recruitment In the midst of the current industry downturn finding a new job in our industry will be a high priority for many. The evidence of the survey shows that personal referral is the most successful method of being recruited as demonstrated in Figure 5. Nearly 40 percent of us got our current job through personal referral, which graphically illustrates the importance of belonging to a strong network like the PESGB. Interestingly these statistics are virtually unchanged since the 2008 survey. Fig. 3 Fig. 4 The relative demographics of the London and Aberdeen PTE populations are compared in Figure 3. The figure shows the bimodal nature of the PESGB population with a significant gap in the age group 30 to 50 especially in London. With respect to academic qualifications shown in Figure 4, more than 75 percent of the membership have a Masters degree qualification or higher. The number of Masters degree graduates has increased from 48 percent to 54 percent since 2008, reflecting industry recruitment. The most popular universities are Imperial, Aberdeen, Royal Holloway, Leeds, Edinburgh and Cambridge. Fig. 5 4 PESGB Membership Survey
Profession Fig. 6 Figure 6 shows the membership of the Society is primarily geosciences-based, with 67 percent of the membership describing themselves as geologists, geophysicists or geoscientists. Other key professional groups include business development managers and sales managers in our service companies; the Society should ensure that we provide activities to help them develop their careers. There has been a dramatic reduction in those describing themselves as managers, from 20 percent in 2009 to just 13 percent in 2014; possibly a reflection that professional rather than managerial skills are more highly prized. Students represent just a small proportion of the survey, however this may not in fact truly represent the proportion of students in the Society as I suspect they would be unlikely to engage with the salary survey. Fig. 7 Employer Cateory Oil company employees constitute 60 percent of the membership whilst service companies are correspondingly fewer at approximately 35 percent. I do not know whether this represents the true split in the technical E&P workforce; if it does not, then some effort ought to be made to widen the appeal of PESGB membership to the service company workforce (Figure 7). PESGB PESGB Membership Membership Survey Survey 5 3
Functional Areas Employed Fig. 8 Within the industry the membership are involved in Exploration, Development and Production activities. Nearly 80 percent of the membership are involved in hydrocarbon exploration (Figure 8), and a similar proportion involved in Field Development and Production. Regions & Petroleum Provinces Fig. 9 In addition to petroleum basins in the UKCS and NW Europe, the membership works basins all around the globe, in particular basins in Africa and the Middle East (Figure 9). 6 PESGB Membership Survey
Fig. 10 Professional Seniority In terms of seniority, Figure 10 shows a very stable distribution from junior professional through to senior management/director. However the graph appears to show a disproportionate number of junior professionals. Possibly this is explained by the small number of employees in the age group (shown earlier in Figure 1) reflecting a slow-down in recruitment in recent years. Other Society Affiliations Fig. 11 Many members are affiliates of other societies. Figure 11 shows that in particular the Geological Society, the EAGE and AAPG have significant overlap with the PESGB membership. PESGB Membership Survey 7
Fig. 12 Retirement The expected membership retirements are shown in Figure 12. The Society must plan for a potentially significant decrease in membership in the next five to ten years which could be up to 30%. This scenario assumes that there is a significant reduction in university recruitment in the next few years, and that membership lapses for many on retirement. 8 PESGB Membership Survey
Salary Survey Base Annual Salary Base annual salary is shown in Figure 13. A log based regression line is shown which reflects salaries in general increasing at a more rapid rate in the early years of a career. You can compare your actual salary to that of the expected salary for your age using this regression line. Fig. 13 PESGB Salary Survey 9
Base Annual Salary: Gender Fig. 14 Salaries are compared by gender in Figure 14. Despite legislation it still appears that female salaries on average continue to lag behind those of their male counterparts. At 50 years of age, female salaries average 25,000 less than their male colleagues. Base Annual Salary: Education Fig. 15 Figure 15 shows salary as a function of education. Surprisingly those with doctorates appear to earn on average less than those with a masters degrees. Only having a batchelors degree however is not a barrier to the highest salaries. 10 PESGB Salary Survey
Fig. 16 Base Annual Salary: Industry Sectors The base salaries are shown by industry segment in Figure 16. This data is further analysed in the following figures. Base Annual Salary: Oil Companies Fig. 17 Figure 17 shows the base salaries for oil company employees. Base salaries increase from majors and large independents to small independents; this we can attribute to the lower job security in small independents and potential wider areas of responsibility. PESGB Salary Survey 11
Fig. 18 Base Annual Salary: Service Companies Salaries for service companies and consultants are shown in Figure 18. There is a small difference between large and small service companies, however independent consultants have the highest base salaries, once again reflecting risk and job security. Figure 19 compares salaries between major oil companies and large service companies. At senior levels there is a very substantial difference between large oil company staff base salary and service companies. Oil Company vs. Service Company Fig PESGB Salary Survey
Base Salary by Technical Specialisation A question that has often been asked is whether geologists or geophysicts earn more than the other. The evidence from the survey is that their base salary remuneration is almost identical as shown in Figure 20. Fig. 20 PESGB Salary Survey 13
Bonus Fig. 21 Only 75 percent of the members surveyed received a bonus. Figure 21 shows the bonuses of those receiving a bonus with the exception of one individual whose bonus was nearly 300k. Bonus by Industry Segment When analysed by industry segment, somewhat unexpectedly service company employees earn on average a larger bonus than those in oil companies as shown in Figure 22. This probably reflects the linkage between bonus earnings and sales amongst those in service companies. Fig PESGB Salary Survey
Fig. 23 Pension The decline of final salary pension funds continues with only 27 percent with final salary pensions versus 34 percent in Similarly money purchase pensions have grown by a similar proportion. PESGB Salary Survey 15
