2 Statements & Search Criteria Statements Mission Statement CASA advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected children involved in the family court system. Based on the belief that every child is entitled to a safe and permanent home, CASA works in the court system through trained volunteers in collaboration with key agencies, legal counsel and community resources to serve as the child's advocate and represent the child in court. Background Statement CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. Nationally, CASA began in Seattle, Washington in 1977, when a juvenile court judge, concerned about making drastic decisions with insufficient information, conceived the idea of citizen volunteers speaking up for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the courtroom. Locally, CASA of Madison County was started by Judge Jeffrey Walson in This program recruits volunteers who go through extensive interviews and background checks, then are trained for 30 hours before being appointed to a child's case. CASA is a unique organization because our volunteers are assigned one child at a time, allowing them the time needed to find a safe, permanent home as quickly as possible. One of CASA's goals is to aid our social workers, attorneys and counselors- many of whom are working cases at a time. Our number one goal is to find permanency for children, so that they may grow up in happy, healthy homes. Impact Statement Accomplishments: in the past year, CASA of Madison County was able to utilize a year-long intern from EKU's MPA program, updated their website, trained new volunteers, recruited new, active board members and began work on a joint fundraiser with Lexington CASA. Goals: For the current year, our number one goal is to increase funds through the use of creative fundraising events and increased grant applications. Other goals include, training, at least, five new volunteers and recruiting, no less than, three new board members. Service Categories Primary Organization Category Crime & Legal - Related / Child Abuse Prevention Geographic Areas Served Areas Madison County CASA of Madison County serves all of Madison County. 2
3 Programs Programs CASA of Madison County Description CASA provides one program: advocating for the best interests of abused and neglected children involved in the family court system. CASA recruits, screens and trains volunteers to provide these advocacy services. Volunteers meet with all interested parties (attorneys, parents, foster parents, teachers, social workers, etc.) in order to gather information about the best placement for the child they are advocating on behalf of. Budget Category Civil Rights, Social Action & Advocacy, General/Other Children's Rights Population Served Children and Youth (0-19 years),, Program Short Term Success Program Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Every child served is a short term program success. When a CASA volunteer is assigned to a case this program considers it a success! The following data comes from the US Department of Justice Office of the Inspector: -Children with a CASA volunteer are sustantially less likely to spend time in long-term foster care, defined as more than 3 years in care: 13.3% for CASA cases versus 27% of all children in foster care. -When a CASA volunteer was involved, both children and their parents were ordered by the courts to receive more services. -Cases involving a CASA volunteer are more likely to be permanently closed than cases where a CASA volunteer is no involved: 5.5% of CASA cases versus 16% of cases without a CASA volunteer. CASA of Madison County measures program success by the number of volunteers trained and the number of children served. Data is tracked using the software program COMET. 3
