6 FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello Association Members, Our recent annual Charity Fair was a very big success! The A-Level of JFB was overflowing with a full house as 20 of our 28 charities who are supported by our Donors Welfare Plan gathered to share information about their respective charities and to thank Department employees for their generosity. A special thanks to all of our Employees Association Board Members who stepped right up to offer their assistance. Matt Woodson, a Power System Representative was a very popular guy as employees followed the aroma of freshly popped popcorn directly to him to get a bag to munch on as they learned more about the various charities who receive our donations. There were door prizes and incentives for employees who made donations, or who increased their payroll deduction contributions. Every dollar is really appreciated and helps, but once in a while the Donors Welfare Plan receives an amazing contribution from former Department employees. The late Ms. Julia M. Payne and the late Mr. Harold Pease are two examples of extraordinary major donors. On March 22, 1964, in a handwritten note to the Employees Association Ms. Payne, a retired Department employee, wrote: Friends: This is my final will & testament stating that I make you complete beneficiary to everything I own (upon my death) (monies and all else.) You all at the Water & Power Department have been so wonderful to me through all of my years of illness & deserve my gratitude and you truly do have it. We never know just when our time is up here on earth, so I had just better take care of this little 4 ASSOCIATION REPORT business while I can, here and now. God bless each & every one of you who have had a part or a word in helping me. Many thanks always, signed Julie M. Payne, Retired, Department. Water & Power, Los Angeles, Calif. In September 1987, Ms. Payne passed away and bequeathed her entire estate of $151,714 to the Association to be used to help the less fortunate as you have helped me Tens of thousands of dollars have been accessible for the past 26 years to fulfill Ms. Payne s wish. A few months ago, an attorney from out of state contacted the Association to inform us that the late Harold Pease, another Department retiree, had willed $69,701 to the Association. The Board will be meeting to discuss specifics on how Mr. Pease s donation should be allocated. It s donations like these and your payroll deductions that enable us to offer financial assistance to 28 local charities and Department employees who are faced with unexpected expenses. Additional information about the Donors Welfare Plan can be found in the Association Report. As we enter the holidays a season of caring and sharing, please stop by the Association Office and ask the staff how you can help by signing up for payroll deductions or increasing the amount of your contribution. Thank you! Sincerely, Gale Harris President LOS ANGELES WATER AND POWER EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION HOLIDAY HOURS The holiday office hours are as follows: November 11, 2013 Closed for Veteran s Day November 28-29, 2013 Closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday December 5, 2013 Closed from 11:30 a.m. 3:00 p.m. December 24, 2013 Open from 8:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. *No Valley Credit Union Sales December 25, 2013 Closed for the Christmas Holiday December 31, 2013 Open from 8:00 AM 1:00 PM * Valley Credit Union sale hours 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. January 1, 2014 Closed for the New Year s Holiday Contact your Employees Association for more information (213)

17 FAIRS & EVENTS THE LADWP BLOOD DRIVE Friday, November 22, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., A-Level in the JFB Cafeteria Conference Center Check with your supervisor then call the Employees Association at (213) to make an appointment. Blood is needed for emergencies and for people who have cancer, blood disorders, sickle cell, anemia and other illnesses. Some people need regular blood transfusions to live. Imagine if giving blood was part of everyone s life. Something you did on a regular basis, like eating at your favorite restaurant. What kind of difference would that make? For nearly 5 million people who receive blood transfusions every year, your donation can make the difference between life and death. TOP 5 REASONS PEOPLE DON T GIVE BLOOD 1. I don t like needles / I am scared of needles / I am afraid to give blood Nearly everyone feels that way at first. However, most donors will tell you that you feel only a slight initial pinch, and 7-10 minutes later, you are finished and headed for the canteen. If you take the time (and courage) to make one donation, you ll wonder why you ever hesitated. 2. I am too busy The entire process takes about an hour, and the ACTUAL BLOOD DONATION TIME IS ONLY 7-10 MINUTES. If you stop to think that an hour of your time could mean a lifetime for a premature baby, someone with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, or someone who s had an accident, you might decide that you can make the time to give the gift of life. 3. No-one ever asked me I didn t realize my blood was needed Consider yourself asked! There is simply no other way to supply the blood needs of hospital patients but for the generous donations of people like you. Every two seconds someone in America needs blood. More than 38,000 donations are needed every day in communities across the U.S. 4. I already gave this year You can give every 56 days. Many donors give 5 times a year! 5. I am afraid I ll get AIDS It is not possible to get AIDS by donating blood to the American Red Cross. A new sterile needle is used for each donor and discarded afterwards. Advertisment and copy above are courtesy of the American Red Cross, Please check with your supervisor, then call the Employees Association to make an appointment at (213) ASSOCIATION REPORT 15

25 Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Would you like to share your blessings with those less fortunate this Christmas Season? Join your many fellow DWP employees who, for the last 12 years, have reached out to families in need in one of the poorest areas of our City, Skid Row. Since 1990, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels has identified, visited, and interviewed families in need in the downtown LA area. Once the need has been verified, they then attempt to get the families adopted. In 2012, there were 425 families that were adopted. In 2012, collectively over 100 warm-hearted and generous LADWP employees were able to adopt 5 families; 1 family of 8, 1 family of 5, and 3 families of 4 - truly making a difference in the lives of these people at Christmas. We itemize each family s needs list provided by the Cathedral and ask that you help with only the item(s) you can afford. Collectively, we are able to fulfill all their needs. Historically, some of their needs have included clothing items, kitchen house wares, linens, personal items, children s toys, bikes, and even beds. The number of families we can adopt depends on the number and generosity of LADWP employees who want to share their blessings. The comforting thing about this charity effort is that the need is verified and you know who your gift of charity is actually going to. Gift items need to be new, gift wrapped, and labeled with the person s name and Family ID number. If you would like to participate this year, please contact recently retired employees Susan and Cliff Damron who have been participating and organizing this charity since Please let us know if you are interested in participating no later than Monday November 25 th. They can be reached at: cliffordandsuandamron@gmail.com OR (310) [Leave a message] ASSOCIATION REPORT 23

26 RECIPES ALMOST-FAMOUS PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE INGREDIENTS: 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 2 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs 2 3/4 cups sugar Salt 2 pounds cream cheese, at room temperature 1/4 cup sour cream 1 15-ounce can pure pumpkin 6 large eggs, at room temperature, lightly beaten 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 2 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 2 cups sweetened whipped cream 1/3 cup toasted pecans, roughly chopped DIRECTIONS: Position a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Brush a 10-inch springform pan with some of the butter. Stir the remaining butter with the crumbs, 1/4 cup of the sugar and a pinch of salt in a bowl. Press the crumb mixture into the bottom and up the sides of the pan, packing it tightly and evenly. Bake until golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Cool on a rack, then wrap the outside of the springform pan with foil and place in a roasting pan. Bring a medium pot of water to a boil. Meanwhile, beat the cream cheese with a mixer until smooth. Add the remaining 2 1/2 cups sugar and beat until just light, scraping down the sides of the bowl and beaters as needed. Beat in the sour cream, then add the pumpkin, eggs, vanilla, 1 teaspoon salt and the spices and beat until just combined. Pour into the cooled crust. Gently place the roasting pan in the oven (don t pull the rack out) and pour the boiling water into the roasting pan until it comes about halfway up the side of the springform pan. Bake until the outside of the cheesecake sets but the center is still loose, about 1 hour 45 minutes. Turn off the oven and open the door briefly to let out some heat. Leave the cheesecake in the oven for 1 more hour, then carefully remove from the roasting pan and cool on a rack. Run a knife around the edges, cover and refrigerate at least 8 hours or overnight. Bring the cheesecake to room temperature 30 minutes before serving. Unlock and remove the springform ring. To finish, place a dollop of the whipped cream on each slice and sprinkle with the toasted pecans. WORLD S SIMPLEST THANKSGIVING TURKEY DIRECTIONS: Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Pull the neck and giblets out of the cavity; ditch the liver and save the rest of the giblets for gravy. Dry the turkey with paper towels, then season inside and out with salt and pepper. Fill the turkey with aromatics like chopped onions, carrots, apples and herbs, then place breast-side up in a roasting pan and brush with melted butter. Tent with foil and roast for 2 hours (for a 10- to 12-pound turkey; add an extra 15 minutes per pound for larger birds). Remove the foil, baste with more melted butter and crank the oven to 425 degrees F. Roast for another hour or until the meat at the thigh registers 165 degrees F. Let rest while you make the gravy. 24 ASSOCIATION REPORT
