1 S E P T E M B E R PROCUREMENT AND LOGISTICS SERVICE MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING On 22 September 2016 Procurement and Logistics Service (PaLS) held a fund-raising Coffee Morning in The Cottage Ballymena for We Are Macmillan Cancer Support. Macmillan nurses provide specialist care to those living with cancer. They provide the best cancer care possible in terms of medical help, practical help and emotional help to not only the cancer patients but to the patients family and loved ones. PaLS staff prepared and brought a vast range of scones, cakes, traybakes, sausage rolls, cocktail sausages, sweets and of course the traditional sponge cake! Staff from Northern HSC Trust, who also reside in The Cottage, attended and contributed which was much appreciated by the organisers from PaLS. At time of going to publication, a total of 260 has been raised for this very worthy cause. Inside this issue... 2 BSO Business Matters August 2016 Page 2 DISABILITY AWARENESS DAYS Are you interested in disability issues? Do you want to play a part in raising awareness on disability matters amongst staff? We are looking for volunteers from across the 11 regional Health and Social Care organisations to become involved in a small working group. Together with members of Tapestry, our new disability staff forum, the group will organise Awareness Days aimed at staff working in the 11 organisations. For example, in the past we featured World Sight Day, where staff from the Royal National Institute for the Blind and Guide Dogs for the Blind came into some of our offices. They spoke about support available for people with sight loss and staff had a chance to try out their sym specs to better understand what it is like to live with certain eye conditions. On another Awareness Day, Action on Hearing Loss gave a talk and provided the opportunity for staff to do a hearing test. What does it involve? There is a range of tasks involved in organising the awareness days. You can become involved in any aspects of it, for example in: organising a coffee morning linking up with voluntary sector groups doing internet searches putting together a display stand. What can you gain from being involved? By being involved, you can: learn more about disability issues and the lives of people who live with a particular disability help change attitudes towards people with a disability and their carers - and help remove barriers that they experience use skills that you currently may not be able to put to use in your job - and develop new skills be part of a new team - get to know and work with colleagues from other teams and organisations.
3 BSO Business Matters August 2016 Page 3 DISABILITY AWARENESS DAYS (continued) What to do if you want to become involved: The work is undertaken during working hours. As all 11 organisations have committed to featuring the awareness days, under their Disability Action Plans, time spent on the work counts as work time. If you are interested in getting involved you should first speak to your line manager. Contact us if you would like to find out more: Speak to us: Equality Unit us: Equality.Unit@hscni.net Or come round to us: 5th floor, Franklin Street, Belfast BT2 8DQ We look forward to hearing from you. National Fraud Initiative 2016/17 (NFI) BSO is required to protect the public funds it administers and may share information provided to us with other publicly funded bodies in order to prevent and detect fraud. The use of data in the NFI data matching exercise is carried out with statutory authority and does not require the consent of the individuals concerned under the Data Protection Act 1998 however, there is a Code of Practice which is adhered to. As a participant in the 2016/17 NFI, BSO will be providing details in respect of pensions, payroll and trader payments so that they can be compared to information provided by other public bodies. NFI is an important counter-fraud tool and runs every two years. The most recent NFI exercise has reported significant monetary outcomes and has also led to a number of convictions. The most significant monetary outcomes are reported below. From 1 April 2014 to 31 March 2016 Pensions fraud and overpayments - almost 1.5m Housing benefit fraud and overpayments - over 1.2m Rates evasion - over 330,000 Further information on NFI is available on the BSO website using the following link: or by contacting BSO s NFI Key Contact Janine Watterson, Financial Governance and Audit Officer,
