CANADA RUSSIA Merchandise Trade Figure 1 In 2013, Canada Russia merchandise trade totalled $2.3 billion, comprised of $1.4 billion in Canadian exports to, and $864.8 million in imports from, Russia.

5 CANADA RUSSIA Merchandise Trade Figure 1 In 2013, Canada Russia merchandise trade totalled $2.3 billion, comprised of $1.4 billion in Canadian exports to, and $864.8 million in imports from, Russia. The value of Canada s exports to Russia decreased by 15.4% between 2012 and 2013, while the value of Canada s imports from the country declined by 13.0%. Russia was Canada s 21 st largest export destination worldwide in In that year, it was Canada s 45 th largest source of imports globally Merchandise Trade Balance Exports Imports Over the 2008 to 2013 period, the value of Canada s exports to Russia decreased at an average annual rate of 1.4%, compared to 0.5% worldwide. The value of Canada s exports to the country as a share of the value of Canada s total exports was 0.3% in both 2008 and The value of Canada s imports from Russia decreased at an average annual rate of 14.7% over the 2008 to 2013 period, compared to an increase of 1.8% worldwide. The value of Canada s imports from the country as a share of the value of Canada s total imports declined from 0.4% in 2008 to 0.2% in At the provincial/territorial level, Quebec and Ontario together accounted for 58.2% of the value of Canada s exports to Russia in 2013, with exports valued at $549.3 million and $263.7 million respectively. Over the 2008 to 2013 period, the fastest-growing provincial exporters to Russia were Nova Scotia, British Columbia and Quebec, with average annual growth rates of 20.7%, 8.7% and 4.0% respectively. 6 CANADA RUSSIA Products Figure 4 In 2013, manufactured goods accounted for 98.2% of the value of Canada s exports to Russia, with resource-based goods representing the remaining 1.8%. This composition had changed somewhat since 2008, when manufactured goods and resource-based goods accounted for 95.2% and 4.8% respectively of the value of Canada s exports to the country. Major Export Products ($ millions) Machinery and equipment Meat and edible offal Aircraft and parts Canada s highest-valued exports to Russia in 2013 were pork, aircraft and crustaceans, which together accounted for 31.3% of the value of Canada s exports to the country. The value of Canadian pork, aircraft and crustacean exports to Russia increased from $250.7 million, $50.2 million and $49.4 million respectively in 2008 to $253.9 million, $109.2 million and $74.7 million respectively in In 2013, manufactured goods represented 81.5% of the value of Canada s imports from Russia, with resource-based goods accounting for the remaining 18.5%. This composition had changed significantly since 2008, when manufactured goods and resource-based goods represented 39.2% and 60.8% respectively of the value of Canada s imports from the country. Canada s highest-valued imports from Russia in 2013 were crude petroleum oil, nitrogenous fertilizers and refined oil, which together accounted for 48.1% of the value of Canada s imports from the country. The value of Canadian crude petroleum oil and refined oil imports from Russia decreased from $1.1 billion and $221.2 million respectively in 2008 to $152.9 million and $126.5 million respectively in 2013, while the value of Canadian nitrogenous fertilizer imports from the country increased from $134.1 million in 2008 to $136.6 million in In 2013, Canada had a trade surplus with Russia in the machinery and equipment, agriculture and food, transportation equipment, forest products and other product categories. It had a trade deficit with the country in all other product categories in that year. 7 CANADA RUSSIA Services and Investment Figure 7 In 2011, the most recent year for which data are available, Canada Russia services trade totalled $846.0 million, comprised of $291.0 million in Canadian exports to, and $555.0 million in imports from, Russia. The value of Canada s services exports to Russia increased by 7.0% between 2010 and 2011, while the value of Canada s services imports from the country grew by 37.4%. In 2011, Canada s trade deficit with Russia was the result of trade in transportation and government services, as well as in commercial services. In that year, Canada imported $359.0 million in transportation and government services from the country, as well as $92.0 million in commercial services, and exported $57.0 million and $84.0 million respectively in such services to Russia. In 2011, Canada had a trade surplus with the country in travel services. The stock of Canadian direct investment in Russia totalled $3.4 billion in 2013, making it Canada s 23 rd largest destination for foreign investment among the 53 countries for which data were available. Canadian direct investment in the country increased by 8.1% between 2012 and In 2010, the most recent year for which data are available, the stock of Russian direct investment in Canada totalled $1.2 billion, making it the 20 th largest source of foreign investment in Canada among the 40 countries for which data were available. Data on Canadian direct investment in Russia for 2005 are not available.
