1 NHS Litigation Authority Matrix Board Meeting 9 May 2012 Deliver finances within agreed Resource Limit Each Management Accounts to end March and draft Annual Accounts show an underspend of 72m. 1 Best value Forward look financial risk assessments Forward forecasts for our various schemes have been shared with DH however the financial pressure which these may place upon members and the DH tariff system require urgent consideration and options appraisal. 2 Maintaining business continuity Claims KPIs/ Measures of success RED Review of support services by DH This report covers to March 31 st. Shelf life for CNST is slightly up on 2010/11 & closure rate is also marginally below the 100% target. Finance to be reassessed between April and August Full business case to then be prepared for all ALB s dependent on outcome. 1
2 NHS Litigation Authority Matrix Board Meeting 9 May 2012 Prompt responses to letters of claim to improve by 10% RED Letters of claim continue to pose difficulties for the Authority (many of which are due to external parties) work will continue to seek improvements both in performance and possibly a more realistic target. 3 Delivering quality services Risk Management (DNV) KPIs On target to be achieved for 2011/12. FHSAU KPIs Improving staff survey outcomes as a measure of employee engagement Biannually Most KPI s met however increased volumes in year and delays by third parties have led to some specific targets being missed. New survey due 2012/13. CD and to arrange focus group with staff. Auditing Panel Solicitors Audit reports as completed. SW 4 Working for a safer NHS Learning lessons from claims SRMRC, Maternity & Surgical Claims Data Projects SRMRC Analysis and Annual Review 2010/11 published in March Work has begun on analysing the reports received in 2011/12. A new report form, supported by revised guidance, has been introduced for 2012/13. From 1 April 2012, all organisations must evidence that action has been taken in relation to the reports as part of the 2

Maternity Claims Data Project received on draft on Ten Years of Maternity Claims: An analysis of NHSLA data are being incorporated into a proposed final version. Surgical Claims Data Project Draft report on preliminary analysis completed and provisional findings shared with representatives from key stakeholders in February 2012 with a view to also shaping Phase II of the Project. A presentation on the Project will follow the Board on 9 May Working closely with our partners Risk Management Forum to provide advice on strategic direction of risk management programme The Acute and Partnership Forums have agreed to merge and s for 2012/13 have been arranged accordingly. A special Maternity Day will be held on 16 May 2012 for Forum members whose organisations provide these services. 6 Delivering for the NHS & responding to Effective communications strategy DC in place to review and advise. Level 2 accreditation maintained in 2011/12. Strategic review of risk management standards and assessments, including risk areas, frequency and length of assessment, value of risk management discounts Considered at Board Away day on 12 April. A paper will be submitted to Part 2 of the Board on 9 May Working closely with our partners Concordat approach to assessments to improve effectiveness and reduce burden Requirements in risk management standards and supporting information reflect current good practice and recommendations Opportunities for joint working with other bodies continue to be considered. Good relations with partners maintained. 6
