2 MARKET REVIEW We continue to believe that the Indian equity market will have to deal with a great deal of macro and political uncertainty over the next few months stemming from Mr. Sachin Relekar Fund Manager Equity (a) continued debate around global slowdown, (b) related monetary policy actions of global central banks, and (c) national elections in India. All the above, coupled with reasonably high valuations, make us stay cautious on the market. EQUITY Market Review Despite optimism in global markets on signs of progress in USChina trade negotiations and US Fed reaffirmation of dovish outlook on interest rates, however domestic sentiments were somber as optimism on rate cut by RBI was outweighed by increase in geopolitical tensions and rising crude prices. Thus, SENSEX was down 1% in month of January. Mr. Marzban Irani Fund Manager Fixed Income On the economy front, real GDP growth moderated to 6.6% in 3QFY19 compared to 7% in 2QFY19. IIP growth strengthened to 2.4% in December against 0.3% in November. CPI inflation moderated to 2.05% in January as against a 2.1% in December while WPI inflation in January moderated to 2.76% from 3.8% in December. DEBT Market Review The Month of February was eventful with two big events of Interim Budget and the MPC meeting. As far as Budget is concerned it was debt market negative. Sectorwise indices For month of February, and Oil and Gas sector indices outperformed and returned 1.7% and 1.4% respectively. Banking and sector indices underperformed the market during the month returning 2.3% and 2.8% respectively. Spending plans were grand but no clarity on revenue. This being a election year the budget was populist. Tax exemptions were announced along with minimum income support to farmers. However there was no concrete plan for receipts and disinvestment side. Capital flows: Fiscal deficit was current year was increased to 3.4% and next year also kept at 3.4%. this was bad for bond market in the medium term due to huge borrowing starting April FIIs were net buyers in the equity to the tune of Rs. 17,220 crores (US$2418mn) in February Cumulatively, FIIs sold equity worth Rs. 22,414 crores (US$ 3,002mn) in last twelve months i.e. from MarFeb19 and DII bought equity worth Rs. 1,00,887 crores (US$14.46bn) for the same period. (As on 28th February 2019, Source: SEBI) (February 2019 Avg. 1 USD = INR 71.20). After a tough budget announcement as far as fixed income market is concerned, where the gross borrowing number was above 7 trillion, the monetary policy announcement was a breather. MPC collectively decided to change the policy stance from calibrated tightening to neutral and four members in MPC voted for a 25 bps repo rate cut. Outlook CPI inflation was revised downwards to 2.80% in Q4, in first half 2020 and 3.9 in Q3 2019/20 mainly because of normal monsoon expectation, moderation in food and fuel prices to continue and inflation outlook of households moderating significantly. The recently published Q3FY19 GDP number showed growth moderation at 6.6% compared to a 7% in Q2FY19. According to Reserve bank of India (RBI) the slowdown in Q3FY19 GDP growth was due to a high base, moderation in both private and government consumption and sharp slowdown in agriculture growth. The positives were continued improvement in investment and export growth. The MFI industry saw strong growth in 3QFY19 (up 43% YoY but slower than 50% YoY in 2QFY19); however, NBFCs led the QoQ deceleration probably due to the recent tightness in liquidity conditions. projections maintained at 7.40% for Some of the Concerns Highlighted by MPC: The boiling tensions between the nucleararmed rivals India and Pakistan have the potential to hurt foreign investments and inturn sour business sentiments for the country. 3QFY19 earning season witnessed recovery in loan growth while asset quality improved further for most banks. Consumer staples companies reported volume growth despite a strong base, however gross margins declined on a YoY basis. There might be a mean revision in food prices in medium term. Oil prices can go volatile. Trade tensions and geopolitical uncertainty. Core inflation. Monsoon outlook. View going ahead : While passenger vehicles volumes were weak, commercial vehicles saw slowdown in volumes, after a string of strong quarters. Cement volumes were decent while profitability was again weak due to input cost pressure. Order booking for capital goods companies slowed down although revenues showed strong growth on a YoY basis. 2 With a stance change accompanied by rate cut, there is a possibility of further rate cuts going ahead. However the rate cutting cycle looks shallow at this point in time. There is not enough room to cut rates aggressively. Further rate actions will be data dependent. Bond yields have declined marginally after the MPC announcement. Expected to remain range bound.
