1 AN ANALYTICAL STUDY OF LIFE INSURANCE IN ANDHRA PRADESH ABSTRACT Mr. K. Phanindra Kumar*; Mr. B. Parashuramulu** *Faculty, Department of Commerce & Business Management, Univ. Arts & Science College, Subedari, Warangal, India. **Research Scholar, Department of Commerce & Business Management, Kakatiya University, Warangal, India. India is fast emerging on the world map as a strong economy and a global power. With a huge population and large untapped market, life insurance happens to be a big opportunity in India. In recent years, there was a remarkable improvement in the Indian life insurance industry, it has geared up in all respects, as well as it being forced to face a lot of healthy competition from many national as well as international private insurance players. insurance companies are expanding their business and giving tough competition to, slight down fall in the market share of after privatization, new business is increasingly going towards private insurance companies but still holding the dominant position and the most trusted brand among the people, the life insurance industry of India witnessed a marvelous growth. The present study is confined to study some statistical figures regarding the performance of Life insurance players of India. In the first section of this paper, shows the procedure to be followed for getting an insurance policy is undertaken and then studied on some statistical inferences regarding their performances. INTRODUCTION Life insurance is the most important and common form of insurance throughout the world. It is a peculiar form of Insurance in which the human life itself is the subject- matter. Life insurance is a protection against the contingencies of human life. It is a provision for old-age or dependents. Human life may be considered to be form of capital. It is indeed an income earning asset. By the death of a person, his dependents are deprived of their earning member. So they go without enough means of living. This contingency or Risk is avoided by life insurance. If a person who has assured his life dies, the sum assured is paid to his dependents. Thus, by virtue of this form of insurance a person becomes valuable and helpful to his family even after his death. This is, in 45
2 fact the real benefit of life insurance. Where the assured or insured survives, and the policy matures, the sum assured is paid to him. It is then a provision for his old-age. Life insurance contains both the elements of protection and investment. Thus life insurance has two elements: Protection against risk Premature Death, Investment Provision for Old Age. DEFINITION Life insurance is a contract to pay a certain sum of money after the expiry of a certain period or after the death of a person. It is defined as a contract whereby the insurer, in consideration of a premium, undertakes to pay an annuity or a certain sum of money, either on the death of the insured or on the expiry of a certain number of years. If the insured dies before the policy matures for repayment, the amount of the policy is paid to his nominee or his legal representative. If the insured survives the term of the policy, the amount of the policy is paid to him. The policy holder goes on paying to the insurer a predetermined sum of money known as Premium. The premium may be annual, half-yearly, quarterly or monthly. The premium must be paid regularly during the period of the policy. OBJECTIVES OF THE PAPER In this paper the following objectives are considered: To present the procedure to take the life policy by an individual. To highlight the various segments like: 1. Total Life insurance premium collected during ; 2. Total Number of Policies sold out during ; 3. Total Number of offices running as on 31 st March, 2012; 4. Total Number of Individual agents working state wise. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY The present study is based on secondary data and the information has been complied from different government records publication and related books and articles. PROCEDURE TO FOR TAKING A LIFE INSURANCE POY A contract of life insurance can be defined as a contract by which one party called the assurer aggress to pay the certain sum of money in consideration of as payment called the Premium on the happening of a certain event, viz, death or reaching a certain age. A life insurance contract is a long-term contract and the assured must pay all the premiums agree at stated internals. Life 46
3 insurance was nationalized in The life insurance corporation of India was set-up to takeover the business of all existing life insurance companies in 1956 and it has the monopoly of life insurance business in India. However insurance business in India is opened to private twenty three companies. A number of steps are to be taken to get a life insurance policy. They are as listed below: Proposal (form to be filled by person who wants to get an insurance policy); Medical Examination of the person to be insured is a must; Scrutiny of Reports by the insurance company; Proof of Age (School Certificate (or) Birth Certificate (or) declaration by court of law); Acceptance of the Proposal (Communicates the acceptance by insurance company); Payment of Premium by the person to be insured; Issue of Policy by Insurance Company. 4 It reveals that our state is also moving ahead as the Indian Life industry is moving. During the year, our state collected a premium amounted Rs crores by & Rs crores by players showing it as 66% of Market is captured by & remaining 34% by private players. TOTAL NUMBER OF POIES SOLD OUT Total No. of policies sold in Andhra Pradesh No. of Policies sold in India No. of policies sold no. of Policies sold It reveals that in our state number of policies sold out in life insurance sector stands at 38,12,609, out-of-which issued a number of 31,58,102 (almost 5 times than all the private market players) & remaining 6,54,507 by market players. While considering total Indian industry also sold 3,57,24,749 (almost 4.5 times more than private players i.e. of 84,35,592). 48
5 TOTAL NUMBER OF OFFICES RUNNING Total No. of Offices in Andhra Pradesh No. of Offices running in India 27% 31% 73% 69% It reveals that in our state number of offices for life insurance sector stands at 1,056, running by a number of 280 & remaining 776 by market players. While considering total Indian industry also is occupying 31% of the total market share and remaining sharing all private players. 49

OF INDIVIDUAL AGENTS WORKING Total No. of Individual Agents in Andhra Pradesh No. of Individual Agents No. of Individual Agents in INDIA No. of Individual Agents It reveals that in our state number of individuals working for life insurance sector stands at 1,86,051, employed by a number of 96,454 & 89,597 members by market players. When compared with Indian Life Insurance total industry, Andhra Pradesh stands at providing a good level of employment sources for the individuals. 50
7 CONCLUSION India is among the important emerging insurance markets in the world. Life insurance will grow very rapidly over the next decades in India. Saturation of markets in many developed economies has made the Indian market even more attractive for global insurance majors. Competition has brought more product innovation and better customer servicing and bring positive influence on the life insurance business. India insurance is a flourishing industry, with several national and international players competing and growing at rapid rates. The overall business of life insurance has been significantly increased after privatization but still a huge Indian population lives is being uninsured. Although is a giant player in life insurance business but private insurance companies are moving at a fast pace. Though the income, size and penetration of private insurance companies is less when compared with but then also the pace with which they are raising their market share is tremendous. insurance companies with its new innovative products and better customer services are expanding their business and will certainly going to give a tough competition to in the coming days.
