1 The Harvey Beef Gate 2 Plate Schools Challenge is an interschool competition aimed at year 11 and 12 students. The Schools Challenge aims to provide an opportunity for students to learn about a variety of aspects related to the beef supply chain, highlight the many and varied career opportunities that exist within the beef industry and provide an opportunity for students to network with representatives from across the supply chain. The School that wins the Challenge takes home the coveted Harvey Beef Gate 2 Plate Schools Challenge trophy and $1000, runner up receives prize money of $500 thanks to sponsorship from Harvey Beef, Coles and MLA. The Schools Challenge is run in conjunction with the Harvey Beef Gate 2 Plate Challenge, WA s only beef supply chain competition. The Harvey Beef Gate 2 Plate Challenge assesses the performance of cattle through the WA grain fed, HGP free, MSA graded supply chain in WA destined for the domestic market. The competition has a strong commercial focus and cattle are evaluated only on commercial attributes that are important for supply chain profitability and efficiency and product quality with detailed feedback provided to the producer. The 2019 challenge is now underway with competition cattle currently being grain finished for processing in April. The Schools Challenge will be held on Wednesday 20 th March 2019 near Albany. The Harvey Beef Gate 2 Plate Challenge also holds a producer field day the day before the schools challenge on the Tuesday 19 th March at Willyung Farms. Students from schools which have entered into the Schools Challenge day are eligible to come to the main field day there will be a small fee to attend the main field day of $10/hd up to 10 students/teachers however if more than 10 are attending it will be caped at $100. This will cover morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. The main field day will involve a number of industry leading speakers presenting on topics relating to the beef supply chain and profitability. Please not the schools challenge is free!

2 Challenge Day s Logistics: The Schools day will run from 8:45am to approximately 3.00pm on Wednesday 20 th March at Willyung Farms approximately 10km from Albany. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. All the students will spend the morning moving around five stations listening to presentations about topics related to the beef supply chain. The topics will be presented by individuals within the industry that have been selected for their knowledge and experience in their fields. The five presentations include information that any student looking for a career in the agricultural industry will find useful and cover topics from across the supply chain. Note that topics will not necessarily be the same as previous years. Students will be selected at random from each team to be tested on each topic. The remaining three students will compete a general quiz, which will be held after lunch. Points from each student s test and the quiz will be collated to identify the winning school. The day is targeted at year 11/12 aged students, however, the team may consist of other aged students if necessary. Entry is FREE to the challenge. The School with the most points at the end of the competition will take home the perpetual Harvey Beef Gate 2 Plate Schools Challenge trophy and $1000 cash, thanks to generous sponsorship from Harvey Beef, Coles and MLA. Sponsorship from our other Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsors has also been used to make the Schools Challenge day possible.
