Section 5.4: AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE OBJECTIVES Learn about different types of auto insurance coverage. Compute insurance costs. Compute payments on insurance claims. Key Terms liable negligent automobile insurance premium claim liability insurance bodily injury liability (BI) property damage liability (PI) uninsured/underinsured motorist protection (UMP) personal injury protection (PIP) no fault insurance comprehensive insurance collision insurance car rental insurance emergency road service insurance actuary surcharge deductible Chapter 5: Automobile Ownership 1
Why is having auto insurance so important? 1. Drivers are liable, or responsible, to pay for the damages they cause with their cars. Even the most responsible driver can be a risk to injure themselves, hurt others or damage property. 2. Drivers could also be sued for being negligent, or at fault, if you cause an accident. 3. Drivers purchase automobile insurance because most drivers cannot afford the costs that could result from an accident. (a) An auto insurance policy is a contract between a driver and an insurance company. (b) Driver agrees to pay a fee called a premium and the company agrees to cover certain accident-related costs when the driver makes a claim, or a request for money. An Overview: Car Insurance Liability Insurance is the most important coverage. Each state sets the minimum liability requirements and regulations vary by state. Liability insurance is required unless the driver can prove financial responsibility otherwise. There are several types of coverage available: (a) Bodily Injury Liability (BI) covers bodily injury if you are at fault in an accident where you are responsible for paying medical expenses of anyone injured. You can purchase as much BI liability as you want. Chapter 5: Automobile Ownership 2
(b) Property Damage Liability (PD) covers damage you cause to other people s property. You are financially responsible if you damage a telephone pole, fire hydrant, another car, or any other property. You can purchase as much PD liability as you want. (c) Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Protection (UMP) coverage pays for injuries to you or your passengers caused by a driver who has no insurance or does not have enough insurance to cover your medical losses. (d) Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage pays for any physical injuries you or your passengers sustain and compensates you regardless of who is at fault, or no-fault insurance. PIP insurance will cover you and people injured in, on, around, or under your car for medical treatment. PIP is mandatory in some states, including New York. (e) Comprehensive Insurance covers repair or replacement of parts of your car if damaged. Chapter 5: Automobile Ownership 3
(e) Comprehensive Insurance covers vandalism, fire, flood, winder, earthquakes, hail, and other disasters including theft. (f) Collision Insurance pays you for the repair or replacement of your car if it is damaged in a collision with another car, object, or if it overturns, no matter who is at fault. Some lenders require collision coverage. If your car is older, comprehensive and/or collision coverage may not be cost effective. (g) Car Rental Insurance pays you for part of the cost of a rented car if your car is disabled because of a collision or comprehensive covered expense. (h) Emergency Road Service Insurance coverage pays for towing or road service when you car is disabled. Gas, parts, and labor are not covered. Statisticians called actuaries predict how often customers will submit claims based on driver classification included age, gender, driving record and location. Chapter 5: Automobile Ownership 4
Example 1 Phoebe s annual premium on her taxi cab is $1,284. If she pays quarterly, there is a $1.50 per payment surcharge (extra fee). What is the quarterly payment? Example 2 Mr. Gellar has $25,000 worth of property damage liability insurance. He caused an accident that damaged a $2,800 fire hydrant and did $5,600 worth of damage to another car. How much of the damage must Mr. Gellar pay out of pocket? 5. A deductible is the amount that the policy owner must pay before the insurance policy pays any money. Once the owner has paid the deductible amount, the insurance company pays the rest of the cost to get the repairs done. When you purchase an insurance policy, you must choose the deductible amount that will be apart of the policy. Typical deductible amounts are $500 or $1,000. A policy premium is higher for lower deductibles. Example: A driver has a $500 deductible and the repairs from an accident total $2,000. The driver pays the $500 first and the insurance company pays the remaining balance of $1,500. Chapter 5: Automobile Ownership 5
Example 3 Monica has $1,000 deductible collision insurance. Monica backs her car into her parent s garage and causes $4,300 worth of damage to the car. How much will her insurance company have to pay? Bodily Injury and Property Damage 6. Notation for Bodily Injury and Property Damage Coverage Bodily injury insurance coverage uses two numbers with a slash between them: Example: 100/ : Maximum amount per accident the insurance company will pay, in thousands of dollars, to any one person who is hurt and sues you due to your driving negligence 300: Maximum amount per accident your insurance company will pay in total to all people who sue as a result of the accident Sometimes bodily injury and property damage are combined into a three number system with two slashes. Example: 100/300/25 100/300: represents the BI insurance coverage 25: $25,000 PD insurance coverage. Chapter 5: Automobile Ownership 6
Example 4 Phoebe s sister, Ursula, was in an auto accident caused by her negligence. She has 100/300 bodily injury insurance. The three people injured in the accident sued. One person was awarded $140,000, and each of the other two was awarded $75,000. How much does the insurance company pay? Example 5 Gunther has 50/100 BI liability insurance when he gets in a car accident. The accident caused injury to 28 children riding a school bus, and each child is awarded $10,000 as a result of a lawsuit. How much will the insurance company pay in total? Chapter 5: Automobile Ownership 7
Example 6 You have a policy with 50/150 BI, $50,000 PD, and $50,000 PIP. You cause an accident in which 7 people are hurt in a minivan and 4 people in your car, including yourself. The eleven people who are hurt have minor injuries and do not sue. The total medical bill for all involved is $53,233. How much does the insurance company pay? Example 7 The chart below illustrates sample annual car insurance premiums. Why does the younger age group pay more for car insurance than the older age groups? Chapter 5: Automobile Ownership 8
