2 Starter Show the students the statements in Resource 1 True or false? and ask them to decide whether each is true or false. For each statement, if they think it is true they should move to the left side of the room and if they think it is false they should move to the right. The answers are: 1. False 2. False 3. False 4. True 5. False Main activity Activity 1: What do I already know about the European Union? Ask the class if they have ever heard of the European Union. Explain to the class that in this lesson they are going to be sharing the information that they already know about the EU and finding out who the members of the EU are. Split the class into groups of three or four and explain to them that they are going to be doing a brain splat. This means that the students have one minute each to put as much information as they can on their brain splat sheet about the topic of the lesson. Hand out one copy of Resource 2 European Union brain splat to each group. Each member of the group takes a turn to add information to the sheet. At the end of the minute, a buzzer will sound and the sheet is passed on to another member of the team who adds more information to the sheet. The answers to the questions on Resource 2 are provided on Resource 3 European Union brain splat (teacher s sheet). Activity 2: Who is a member of the European Union? Before the lesson, prepare Resource 4 Member state anagram cards by cutting up all the letters and putting the letters for each country into different envelopes (for example, one envelope for the letters in Spain). Explain to the class that they are going to identify the members of the European Union. Split the class into groups of three of four. Start by giving each group one envelope. Tell the groups that they have to open the envelope and rearrange the letters to identify one of the member states. Once they have completed the first one, they should collect another envelope Page 2 of 10

3 The team that can unscramble the most member states in the time allowed wins. Students feed back the states that they have identified. Resource 5 Member states gives the answers. Plenary Students complete Resource 6 What have I learnt today? which asks them to write down three things they have learnt, two skills they have used and one question they would like answered on the topic of the EU. Aim high For more able students put more then one nation in each envelopes for Activity 2. More able students will be able to add more information to Resource 2. A lot of what the EU does is about bringing people in Europe closer together. It tries to make it easier for Europeans to buy and sell things to each other. This is done by changing the rules that control trade. It is also getting rid of controls that stop people from EU countries moving around freely inside the Union. The EU backs things like exchange visits that help ordinary Europeans to understand what they all have in common. WHEN was the EU set up? In 1957 the Treaty of Rome created the European Economic Community (EEC), or Common Market. EUROPEAN UNION WHERE are the key parts of the EU based? The governing institutions of the European Union (EU) are not concentrated in a single capital city; they are instead based across three cities (Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg) with further agencies and other bodies spread further out. However, Brussels has become the primary seat, hosting a seat, if not the main or only seat, of each major institution and now the European Council WHY was the EU set up? The European Union was set up with the aim of ending the frequent and bloody wars between neighbours, which culminated in the Second World War. As of 1950, the European Coal and Steel Community began to unite European countries economically and politically in order to secure lasting peace Page 6 of 10
