The Science of Budgeting Section 1 - Renewing your mind I. A Great Responsibility to Steward Resources Our total household income X 10 years = Good stewardship is about understanding that in the end God will have expectations about how we have dealt with all the blessings He has given us, spiritual and physical. (Matthew 25:14-30; 1 Peter 4:7-11) II. Passages Preached for the Purpose of Heart Change A. God has spoken in His Word God s Ownership 1 Chronicles 29:10-14 and Matthew 6:19-24 Debt s Dangers 1 Timothy 6:2-10 Greed s Antidote 1 Timothy 6:17-19 God s Purpose, Money and Work Luke 12:31-34 B. Think about the Word day and night (Romans 12:2; Colossians 3:16; Psalm 119:9-16) 30 days Read, Think, and Act o Read at least one of these passages each day for 30 days. Write the passages on note cards; put the cards on the fridge, in your wallet, and anywhere else you look. Make the passages your computer wallpaper. o Think deeply about how God wants you to think about money. Pray about it. Talk about it with your spouse, friends, and kids. 1
o Act! Do something to honor God with your finances. Keeping track of your finances with a Working Budget is a great place to start. Day Don t quit. Pray hard. Find a way to keep the Working Budget working. Section 2 A Working Budget I. We live on a budget! We fool ourselves, and we try to fool others. We look at our checking account balance to find out if we have enough money to o Go out to eat o Buy a new dress, gadget, TV, car, vintage coin, etc. o Pay the bills I spend less than I make. I always have money left over at the end of the month. We only shop when things are on sale. I never pay full price for anything. We set aside money for the stuff we need like rent, groceries, and the car payment. We have so little that we only buy what we need. We can afford all our monthly payments. Some months, we even pay a little more than the minimum payment. Think II. A Working Budget It works! Think Realistic o If you are married, this may get complicated. (Ephesians 5:22-33; 1 Peter 3:7) 2
Functional Track and Match o A Working Budget can track income and expenses Income is completely divided into categories (envelopes) each time you are paid until every penny is in a category When money is spent, it has to come from a category (envelope) that has money available. o You know how to match the balance of your categories to your checking account to prevent an error. Built in Rewards and Accountability o Rewards A Working Budget has the ability to carryover an unused balance to the next month. This is especially helpful for expenses that vary a little bit throughout the year. A Working Budget allows you to see unused balances in a particular category and apply them to debt elimination, savings, or another expense. o Accountability A Working Budget can be the bad guy. If the money is not available in that category (no matter what the checking account balance says), you don t spend it. If you spend more than you have in a category, you get less the next month. III. Resources to Create a Working Budget Excel spreadsheet 3
Old fashion accounting paper Money Map - available for download from crown.org for $60 Mvelopes - crown s online system for $7 - $12 a month depending commitment length Real envelopes to hold real cash IV. Determining Priorities and Setting up your Categories (Envelopes) Look at a budget sheet and determine what envelopes are needs (Luke 12:22-34) Write the number 1 next to every category that is a need Add in just a little bit of Fun Money to relieve the tension Take all the remaining money and put it toward accomplishing goals Reward major accomplishments by slowly funding other categories that are labeled with a number 2 Section 3 Goals Goal # 1 Create a Working Budget that honors God by beginning with a tithe. Goal #2 Learn how to track expenses Goal #3 - Save $1000 for emergencies. Goal #4 Eliminate all non-mortgage debt Debt Elimination (Debt Snowball) o Start with the smallest debt o Put all your extra money into paying off your smallest debt while you pay the minimum on the rest 4
o As you pay off a debt, roll all that money into the next debt until all your debts are paid o Consider selling items, a second job, and evaluate your withholdings Goal #5 Save 3-6 months of expenses The next steps need to be prayerfully considered based on your age and family situation. This is a great time to reevaluate your giving and consider giving more. Dave Ramsey recommends the following order: Goal #6 Invest 15% of your income into Roth IRA or other pre-tax retirement plan Goal #7 College funding Goal #8 Pay off your home Goal #9 Become wildly generous! If you have this expense, the percentage shown must be deducted from other budget categories. 4 This category is used when surplus income is received. This would be kept in the checking account to be used within a few weeks; otherwise, it should be transferred to an allocated category. * In some cases earned income credit will apply. It may be possible to increase the number of deductions to lessen the amount of tax paid per month. Review the last tax return for specific information.
