2 FoodServiceEurope About us Previously known as FERCO, FoodServiceEurope was established in 1990 to represent the contract catering sector towards the EU Brings together 10 national associations representing contract catering across Europe Through the Food Service Round Table also brings together senior business leaders of five of the largest European contract catering companies Speaks on behalf of 80 % of the EU food service market, representing employers of over 600,000 people across Europe, delivering over 6 billion meals every year. Contract catering covers food services for people working or living in communities: private and public undertakings, schools, hospitals, retirement homes, prisons

4 Background EU Action Plan on Childhood Obesity Launched on Feb 2014 by Member States and endorsed by the Council of the EU on 20 June 2014 Aims to halt the rise in overweight and obesity in children and young people (0-18 years) by 2020 Includes operational objectives notably on: Promotion of healthier environments in schools and pre-schools Make the healthy option the easier option Inform and empower families Recognizes the importance of a whole of society approach and calls for action by Member States, the European Commission and Civil Society Acknowledges the role of the private sector in contributing through voluntary action and multi-stakeholder approaches Industry also has a role to play in halting the rise in overweight and obesity in children Stakeholders are encouraged to make commitments to the EU Platform in areas such as food reformulation and catering, including initiatives to create and promote healthy dietary choices in children.

6 Model EU School Food Standard Bringing together expertise The Model School Food Policy has been prepared by an ad-hoc Working Group of representatives from FoodServiceEurope members and company expert nutritionists An external nutritionist has also been consulted and the expert perspective has helped improve initial draft Prepared on the basis of existing materials at national and international level, gathering best practices from across the EU

7 Model EU School Food Standard A tool for engagement Follows a flexible approach, by recognizing the need to adapt requirements to local culture and traditions A balanced approach for balanced diets has been adopted, taking notably into account the age of the child Not meant to replace existing legal requirements, but rather encourage change where there is scope for improvement Underlines importance of cooperation between stakeholders and emphasises importance of healthy school environments

8 Model EU School Food Standard Contents Key objective : Provide EU reference standard for procurers and companies to promote change at national level where improvements are possible School Lunch Food Based Standards: include min & max recommended frequencies of different food groups and an indication of portion sizes Nutrient based Standards: reference to adequate energy, fat, sugar and salt intake Food Provided Outside Lunch Mainly food based standards with general guidance provided. Promotion of Healthier School Environment General guidance on vending machines, staff training, dining spaces and facilities, etc.

9 Implementation Next Steps Dissemination at EU level May 2017 Start outreach to relevant external EU stakeholders for their potential support and for dissemination of the Model EU School Food Policy Implementation at National Level 19 May 2017 General Assembly adopts Model EU School Food Standard and agrees next steps 1 June 2017 Presentation at EU Platform meeting By end summer Secretariat to prepare toolkit for implementation at national level June Dec 2017 Ongoing outreach to relevant external EU stakeholders for their potential support and for dissemination of the Model EU School Food Policy Sept Dec 2017 Members to adopt National Action Plans and publication in national and FoodServiceEurope websites
