Pinkston High School ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT The purpose of ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT is to provide an opportunity for students to regain course credit lost due to extenuating circumstances resulting in excessive absences. Dallas ISD Board Policy states, The purpose of this written notification is to make the parent aware that the student has missed several classes and may be in jeopardy of losing credit for the semester course if he or she misses ten percent of the days the class is offered. If the student continues to miss class, the school shall notify the parents, after the student has missed ten percent of the days the class is offered, that the student has lost credit for the course for the semester. The parent may file a petition to appeal the loss of credit to the attendance committee. Extenuating circumstances include, but are not limited to: Medical conditions or treatment of the students (verified by a physician): o Pregnancy o Long-term viral or bacterial illnesses requiring full-day or partial-day absences o Hospitalization Family emergencies: o Death in the immediate family o Death in family that requires out of state or out of country travel o Financial emergencies resulting in temporary homelessness or resident instability o Events that affect residency such as home fire, flooding, earthquake o Traumatic events such as medical conditions of immediate family, domestic violence resulting in temporary residency changes, mental/social/emotional events that result in temporary changes in residency or require the student to serve as primary caretaker of immediate family The L.G. Pinkston Attendance Committee will consider all information presented at the appeal hearing and is given the responsibility to award the student the opportunity for credit recovery. The decision by the committee will be communicated in writing to the parents of students and students appealing the No Grade designation. ******************************* Students with additional absences not related to the above described circumstances are provided the following credit recovery options: Dallas ISD Board Policy states: When a student s attendance drops below 90 percent but remains at least at 75 percent of the days the class is offered and earns a passing grade, the student may earn credit for the class by completing a plan approved by the principal that provides for the student to meet the instructional requirements of the class. Students who received a No Grade (NG) due to excessive absences will be notified by the Attendance Clerk. Parents of students or students with excessive absences not related to the above listed criteria are required to meet with L.G. Pinkston Attendance Committee regarding the No Grade designation and agree to conditions of the L. G. Pinkston credit recovery plan. The credit recovery plan must be completed by the deadline assigned by the L.G. Pinkston Attendance Committee. Failure to complete the credit recovery plan by the specified dates will result in denial of course credit.

STUDENTS MAY ONLY RESTORE CREDIT ONE TIME A YEAR PER CLASS.* 1-9 days absent serve 2 hours days absent serve 3 hours days absent serve 6 hours days absent serve 9 hours 24 days and over are not eligible except by an approved appeal. TO BE ELIGIBLE THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET: 1 ST SEMESTER Due date Friday February 28, 2014 Semester grade average must be 70% or higher for a semester course or 60% or higher for a year-long course. Student attendance must be between 90% - 75% inclusive. Students with less than 75% attendance may submit an appeal; however, appeals will be granted only for extenuating circumstances, i.e. hospitalization, death of parent or sibling, abnormal pregnancy, etc. Appeal forms may be picked up in the library. Completed forms are to be deposited in the ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT BOX IN THE LIBRARY AND ATTENDANCE OFFICE. Completed Attendance for restoration forms, including signatures, are to be deposited in the Attendance for Credit Restoration box in the Library and Attendance Office. All forms must be submitted by the scheduled due date of Friday, February 28, Restoration hours may be earned during tutoring hours before or after school. Only courses being taught during Saturday School may use Saturday School hours towards restoration. 2 nd SEMESTER Due date Friday, May 9, th and 5 th six weeks must be 70% or higher for a semester course or 60% or higher for a year-long course. Student attendance must be between 90% - 75% inclusive. Students with less than 75% may submit an appeal; however, appeals will be granted only for extenuating circumstances, i.e. hospitalization, death of parent or sibling, abnormal pregnancy, etc. Appeal forms may be picked up in the library. Completed restoration forms, including signatures, are to be deposited in the Credit Restoration box in the Attendance Office and Library. All forms must be submitted by the scheduled due date Friday, May 9, Attendance for Credit hours may be earned during tutoring hours before or after school. Only courses being taught during Saturday School may use Saturday School hours towards restoration. Students who are absent after being assigned Attendance for Credit Restoration may submit an appeal form for additional restoration hours; however, appeals will be granted only for extenuating circumstances, i.e. hospitalization, death of parent or sibling, abnormal pregnancy, etc. ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT RESTORATION MAY ONLY BE USED TO RESTORE TIME. THE REQUIRED WORK WILL NOT BE USED AS MAKE-UP WORK. THE GRADE WILL NOT BE CHANGED. *MAY BE APPEALED FOR CASES WITH EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES.

3 Students who have long term medical needs requiring an extended period of absence should contact Health Services at (972) to learn about programs designed to prevent the loss of attendance hours resulting in the need for Credit Restoration. ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT GUIDELINES Due to absences (excused and unexcused) you have failed to attend at least 90% of the time your class met during first semester. To receive credit for your class you must make up ( recover ) the hours of class time you missed. Attendance for Credit Recovery is required if you have missed between days AND are passing your class(or may average out for the year). If you miss more than 22 days you are not eligible to make up the hours and you will NOT receive credit for your class. You must retake the class next year. ***If you have a year-long class and have a 1 st semester grade of you have the potential to pass for the year so you need to complete credit recovery. Here s how ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT works at L.G. Pinkston High School Based on the number of hours you need to recover for credit you have been assigned one or more of the following options. Credit Recovery Saturday School: 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. in the Cafeteria Credit Recovery Before and After school: 8:00-9:00AM AND/OR 4:00-5:00PM Reconnection Center: if assigned (You cannot just show up to the Reconnection Center.) SAT Testing-If student takes SAT/ACT we will award 10 hours. IF YOU DO NOT COMPLETE ALL 1 ST SEMESTER CREDIT RECOVERY HOURS BY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2014 YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR YOUR 1 ST SEMESTER CLASS(ES). IF YOU ARE A SENIOR AND DO NOT COMPLETE YOUR 1 ST SEMESTER RECOVERY HOURS BY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2014 YOU WILL MOST LIKELY NOT GRADUATE!!!!!!!! So, to complete your ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT hours you will need to: 1. Follow the plan on your Attendance for Credit Recovery worksheet. (Go to Saturday school, or Reconnect or whatever is assigned on your Attendance Committee Hearing/Attendance for Credit Recovery form indicates.) 2. Sign-in each time you attend ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT session AND follow the rules while you are there. 3. After you finish an ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT session turn in your Attendance for Credit SIGNED sheets to the library or attendance office.

4 ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT SESSION RULES You must arrive on time for the session. o If you are more than 10 minutes late for BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL session you will not be allowed to stay. o If you are more than 20 minutes late for a Saturday session you will not be allowed to stay. No cell phones may be visible or used during the Credit Recovery session. Cell phones that are visible or used will be taken and held until the next school day. The fine will be $5.00. You must have academic work to do during your entire time in ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT. It must be related to the class in which you are recovering hours. No sleeping No eating (except during scheduled breaks) No talking to other students You may not put your head down If you leave early, you will not receive any credit for the time you were there. Violation of any of the rules will result in your dismissal from ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT and time will not be counted.
