Vernon, OH (740) PRE-APPLICATION INFORMATION Please Keep This Page For Your Records Dear Applicant, Habitat for Humanity is a non-denominational, Christian housing ministry that seeks to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. We construct simple, affordable houses sold at no profit with no-interest mortgages. Our homes are built using volunteers in partnership with approved Habitat families. If you would like assistance in completing your application, you may call us at the number listed above. Please read the following to determine if you meet Habitat s guidelines. HOW DOES HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF KNOX XOUNTY, OHIO WORK? Through tax-deductible donations of money, materials and volunteer labor, Habitat builds and/or renovates homes with the help of the future homeowner or partner family. Houses are sold to partner families for no profit with no-interest mortgages. Costs of the homes differ due to location, labor, land, and materials. Currently, a Habitat home in Knox County averages $70,000. Mortgages are issued for a fixed time period; small monthly payments, including taxes and insurance, are repaid over 20 to 30 years and deposited into a revolving Fund for Humanity which supports the construction of more houses in Knox County. Mortgage payments must be on time and in full each month in order that home ownership is not compromised. HOW DOES THE PARTNERSHIP WITH HOMEOWNERS WORK? Habitat is not a giveaway program; it is a joint venture in which those who benefit from the housing ministry are involved in the work at various levels. Each homeowner/partner family is required to invest sweat equity hours into the construction of their home. HOW ARE PARTNER FAMILIES SELECTED? Families apply to the local Habitat for Humanity program. The Family Selection Committee selects Partner Families based on their level of need, their ability to successfully manage outstanding debt as well as their ability to make monthly mortgage payments and their willingness to become partners in the program. Every project follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. Race, religion, and ethnicity are not factors in choosing the families to receive Habitat houses. Habitat for Humanity of Knox County, Ohio, Inc. provides mortgages for HFH houses to applicants who have a minimum credit rating of 575 and are at least 21 years of age.
