1 Chapter 9 Car Activity Name: BUYING A CAR INTRODUCTION For the past few years you've been wondering what it will be like to be able to own your own car. The moment when you are the one in the driver's seat is here and you need to purchase some wheels. Your parents told you that if you wanted a car, you'd have to 'foot the bill' yourself. You've always said you'd buy a new red Trans Am and now's your chance...well sort of. Let's see if you can afford your car and what you'll need to do! THE TASK Section1 Directions: Identify your personal transportation wants and needs by answering the following questions: How will you use your car? Choose all that apply. Drive to school Drive to work Carry friends Carry family members Hauling Sports and Recreation What kinds of roads will you drive on? This will help you decide whether you need a frontwheel, rear-wheel, or four-wheel drive vehicle. Highway City Suburban Rural Off-road Mountain roads & Snow conditions Where will you park your car most of the time? Your parking space will determine the amount of money you will want to spend if the car isn t protected from the weather or theft. Driveway Street Parking lot Garage What extra features would you like in a car? Sun roof/moon roof Manual or automatic transmission Air-conditioning Traction control CD player Power windows and doors Antilock brakes Tinted windows Power steering Airbags Other
2 Section 3: Financing Directions: Find out how much it would be to finance your cars. Access the following website: Enter the purchase price, down payment, interest rate and loan term. When entering info into the payment calculator AND when filing out the table below please keep in mind the following assumptions: Your down payment is going to be 20% of the purchase price The interest rate will be 7% The term is 36 months VEHICLE (from table on prior page) PURCHASE PRICE (from table on prior page) DOWN PAYMENT (20% of purchase price) AMOUNT FINANCED (purchase price down payment) INTEREST RATE LOAN TERM MONTHLY PAYMENT TOTAL AMOUNT REPAID COST OF LOAN (total interest paid)
3 Section 4: Insurance Directions Find out how much it would be to insure your car. Chose one car you researched from each of the three categories (compact, midsized, and luxury). a. Using each car s features complete the survey on the following website to receive a free quote: You may have to enter personal information to have these rates listed for you. **Please do not ever give your personal information such as your social security or your home address. Use the school's address for the mailing address. Many companies use this in order to solicit their services, other times it is necessary to obtain accurate geographical data. b. Assume you drive 15,000 miles a year. c. Assume you want the following types of insurance coverages: TYPE OF INSURANCE COVERAGE Bodily Injury Liability(BI) $100,000/$300,000 Property Damage Liability(PD) $100,000 Limited Property Damage Liability Decline this coverage Personal Injury Protection(PIP) $300 deductible Property Protection(PP) $1,000,000 Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury $100,000/$300,000 Comprehensive(COMP) $250 deductible/broad form Collision(COLL) $500 deductible Emergency Road Service(ERS) Accept this coverage Rental Reimbursement(RR) Decline this coverage d. Fill in the quotes in the table below VEHICLE 6 MONTH QUOTE MONTHLY INSUR. PYMT ANNUAL PREMIUM Which car had the most expensive insurance? Which car had the least expensive insurance? 4 Section 5: Maintenance Directions: Chose one of the three cars from section 4 to estimate how much it will cost you to keep the vehicle you chose on the road. EXPENSES (Monthly Operating Costs) COSTS Taxes & Fees Check with the county auditor for the taxes, fees, and tests required in your city/state. Divide the total of all taxes and fees and divide by 12 months in a year. Registration/Tabs (5% of the base price) = $ Total Monthly Taxes & Fees = $ Maintenance The average person drives their car 15,000 miles per year. Use this number to estimate maintenance expenses. Check with your parents and/or repair shops for estimates. Divide the result of this multiplication by 12 months in a year. Oil change and lubrication (Calculate all and choose one) Every 3,000 miles = 5 times per year x $ (enter cost) = $ Tire rotation (every 5,000 miles = 3 times per year) = $ Tune-up (every 30,000 miles = ½ times per year) = $ Total Monthly Maintenance = $ Gas Estimate your annual fuel cost at: based on the average of 15,000 miles per year.
