2 Inventory Information Packet Compiled by: Wilda M. DeKerlegand Senior National Sales Director. With contributions by Rita Knox Why Should I Have Inventory? Maintaining a good inventory is the first step toward building a strong customer service business. Just as you depend on your florist to carry fresh flowers, your customers depend on you to offer the same professional service. A good inventory will also motivate you to reach higher sales goals, increase customer satisfaction, and reduce business costs. Some new recruits do not understand the total value of their initial order for their inventory. This is very understandable because it is new and let s face it, borrowing money can be a little overwhelming. However, you are borrowing money to make money. In addition, you re making 50% on your money. That s a good investment! Starting your business with inventory is one of the keys to success. Can you imagine the difficulty of a retail store opening for business with a couple of items versus stocking the store with complete inventory? What the eye sees, the eye will buy customers will purchase more when they can feel, touch, and smell it. Think of how many times we go to the grocery store for a gallon of milk and leave with 10 or more other items. A full inventory gives customers the option to buy to their hearts content. You cannot sell from an empty wagon! The more you have to show, the more you sell, and the faster you sell it. A good, workable inventory means having enough product to deliver on the spot. (Time is money) Can you imagine the difficulty of opening a store with no inventory or even a few bare shelves? Professional Consultants deliver on the spot. They are not order takers (making customers wait weeks for products while they get enough money together to order). When you go to a store would you rather be able to feel, see, and purchase on the spot, OR look through a book, make an order, and wait 7-10 days for your product? Having enough inventory or cash in your business means being able to pay yourself right from the start! A full inventory shows commitment. want to do business with committed consultants. Maintaining a good level of inventory is the first step toward building a strong business. When you have products available for immediate delivery; you work smart, not hard. You spend less time running around trying to get product from other consultants which is not a recommended practice. My Document/Mary Kay Documents/Inventory.pub 2/07 1

10 Where do I get the money? Bank loans are highly recommended. Interest rates are fixed and you know exactly what your monthly payments are. A 24--month loan is recommended. Bankers are more than willing to make a loan to women than men. Women have better repayment records. The Company offers the 90% buyback guarantee. You may choose to use a credit card Visa, MasterCard, or Discover credit cards are great to place orders. You may borrow from a family member. Ask for a personal loan for business reasons. Starting with personal money is unwise, you cannot write off interest. Maintaining a good level of inventory is the first step toward building a strong customer service business. When you borrow money for inventory, you are providing money to create income, not debt. Mary Kay accepts Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. Banks are more are more likely to lend money for higher inventory levels. Be prepared to go to several banks. Start where you bank most often and then shop around for interest rates. Some banks now take the product as collateral (if necessary in your situation). You must sign an agreement that states if you should decide to return the product for repurchase, the money would be paid to the bank. Be professional. Dress up...dress, suit, heels, the works. Look the part of a consultant. Appearance, body language, and a confident demeanor may make a difference. Be confident and enthusiastic. Take your datebook or list of appointments for parties and facials you re going to be holding. Have a business plan and have goals set. Your director or recruiter can help you with your plan. Arrive minutes early to fill out the application before your appointment. Be prepared to get your spouse s signature or a co-signer if necessary. Be prepared to switch banks if necessary. You may be able to get a lower interest that way. Show the 90% Buy Back Guarantee on your agreement. Pay back on schedule, not ahead of time. A 24-month loan is recommended. 12 YOU MUST UNDERSTAND WHAT REAL DEBT REALLY IS!! Shared by Jill Christensen by Robert Schuller What, after all is debt? Fresh out of the seminary, newly married and just installed as pastor of my first church, I was earning a little over $ a month. When winter approached, I needed coal for the furnace. I went to the coal yard and asked how much coal I would have to by, how much it would cost and if I could charge it. About five tons, it will cost you $76.00, and we will not charge it. Reverend, you ll have to borrow the money somewhere for we don t give credit on coal. And that was that. So, I went to ask for a loan for $65.00 for the coal. The banker gave me a valuable lesson in economics. I ll lend you the money for coal this time, but never again. When you borrow money for coal, you are going into debt. The coal will be burned. When it is gone, if you are unable to pay your loan, there is nothing you can sell to pay us back. When you borrow money for coal, or food, or the light bill, or the water bill, you are spending money that is gone forever. This is real debt! If you want to borrow money to buy a car or a house, we will lend you the money. Then you are not going into debt; you are going into the investment business. If you cannot pay off your auto loan, you can sell the car, pay us back what we have coming, and any money you have left is your return on your investment. If you borrow money to buy a store and you borrow money for salable goods to put on to the shelves, you are not in debt, you are in business. If you cannot pay off your loan, we sell the store and the goods; and if there is money left over after we are repaid, you can have the profit from your investment. If you have no money over after paying off the loan, you haven t made any money. It s that simple! It was this advice which was to give me greater courage years later when starting our new church. How long would it take to collect the money from surplus offerings? Perhaps 20 years! So, we decided to borrow the money. When finished, the entire development was valued at $1 million. Nearly $600,000 was borrowed money. Someone said to me about that time, I hear you folks have a debt of $600,000. I corrected him, Actually, we have no debt. We could sell our property for a million dollars, pay off all mortgages, and have $400,000 in the bank. We don t have a debt. We re worth almost half a million dollars! So, it is with your Mary Kay business! Good Luck in your decision making Process! My recommendation for most is ruby star order or above. Wilda My Document/Mary Kay Documents/Inventory.pub-2/05 11
