1 Joint Bank-Fund Library Collection Development Policy August 2000 The Joint Bank-Fund Library s collection supports the institutional commitments of the World Bank Group (WBG) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This collection of both print and electronic books and serials concentrates on economics, public and social policy, international and government finance, trade, development issues, and the economic conditions of countries, particularly those in the developing world. Materials are from commercial sources as well as regional and international organizations, such as the United Nations, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, International Labour Organisation, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, etc. Emphasis is placed on recently published material, although the Library is a source of WBG and IMF publications going back to The Library acquires materials in various languages and from all nations, whether or not they are members of the WBG and IMF. However, in general, the Library does not buy materials translated from English into other languages. Government Statistical Publications The Library emphasizes economics related government statistical publications from developing countries and is more selective in acquiring government publications from developed countries. For example, it does not collect census reports for most industrialized countries. Periodicals and Newspapers The print and electronic periodical collection supports the subject areas of development economics, banking, and finance, and includes a limited number of more general interest titles. The Library collects a limited number of print newspapers from all over the world, particularly those with strong economic or financial focus, and provides electronic access to many more. Other Serials The print and electronic serials collection includes periodic government statistical publications, annual reports of major international development organizations, business and company directories, and specialized reference sources. In general, the Library does not collect annual corporate reports. Microforms The microform collection includes serials, and monographs as well as the Economic Working Papers (EWP) series.
2 Special Collections The Bretton Woods File. This collection consists of a compilation of materials relating to the histories, policies and operations of the WBG and IMF. It contains newspaper and journal articles, editorials, speeches by World Bank and IMF staff, press releases, internal publications, and selected documents of these organizations from 1932 to the present. Work on building a digital archive of documents dated from 1932 through June 1963 is in progress. Links to full-text versions and images of these documents are accessible through the JOLIS Library Catalog. Research Papers File (RPF). Research from academic and financial institutions is often first published in working/research papers series before being reissued as journal articles or book chapters. Because of the timeliness of these series and staff needs for access to research results, the Joint Library indexes selected working/research paper series. These papers are indexed according to the WBG and IMF development and international finance taxonomy to assure access to targeted information. Most working/ research papers are kept for ten years in the Joint Library Research Papers File (RPF). With the exception of the IMF Research Department Seminar Series, which is indexed, all of the World Bank and IMF working papers are cataloged so that they can be retained for a longer period in the Library collection. As electronic versions of working/research papers become available, full-text links are added to the JOLIS Library Catalog records for easy access. Reference Collection. Reference materials include business, investment, biography, banking, and education directories. The collection also includes the annual publications of the IMF and the WBG, dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, and some general interest material. Travel Collection. Collection development emphasis has been reduced here due to the wealth of travel related information on the Internet. Gifts The Joint Library accepts and keeps donations of major government publications, especially from developing member countries, particularly when they fill gaps in the collection.
