1 Preparing Payroll Records

2 Salary The money paid for employee services. Pay Period The period covered by a salary payment. Semimonthly Pay Period Paid twice a month, 15 th and 30 th. Payroll The total amount earned by all employees for a pay period.

3 Overtime Work over 8 hours per day. 1 ½ times the normal rate of pay Total Earnings The total pay due for a pay period before deductions.

11 Form W-4: Employee s Withholding Allowance Information used to determine the amount of income tax withheld. Marital Status Number of Withholding Allowances Withholding Allowance A deduction from total earnings for each person legally supported by a taxpayer, including the employee. The larger the number of withholding allowances claimed, the smaller the amount of income taxes withheld.

16 Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) Provides for a federal system of old-age, survivors, disability, and hospital insurance. Social Security Tax A federal tax paid for old-age, survivors, and disability insurance. 6.5% of earnings Medicare Tax A federal tax paid for hospital insurance. 1.5% of earnings

17 Social Security and Medicare taxes are paid by both the employees and employer. Employers are required to withhold and deposit employees part of the taxes and pay a matching amount of these taxes. Tax Base The maximum amount of earnings on which a tax is calculated.

Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) A computerized cash payments system that uses electronic impulses to transfer funds. Direct Deposit
