As a result, the surplus rose Because of lower purchases of precious stones and metals, total Belgian imports of goods from India were down by 20.9% in There was no considerable change during the following two years, as imports dropped by another 1.9% and 1.6% in 2013 and Imports started to recover modestly in 2015 with a rise of 1.0%, after which the growth rate further increased to 5.8% during the past year. The evolution of Belgian exports of goods to India is traditionally influenced a great deal by a rise or decrease in exports of precious stones and metals. After they displayed a drop of 0.6% in 2012, exports fell by another 0.5% in Thanks to higher exports of the aforementioned precious stones and metals, total exports were able to record a rise of 8.5% in They were unfortunately not able to continue this positive trend because lower sales of precious stones and metals once again caused total exports to drop by 8.8% in They rebounded in 2016 by displaying a growth rate of 3.9%

3.1. TRADE IN GOODS EXPORTS In 2016, precious stones and metals took the top position in total Belgian exports of goods to India. With EUR 6,557.0 million, this group of products represented a share of 80.8% in total exports. This section was mainly composed of diamonds, whether or not worked, but not mounted or set. Exports of chemical products (main subsections: medicaments consisting of mixed or unmixed products for therapeutic or prophylactic uses and human vaccines ) amounted to EUR million or a share of 4.8%. Machinery and equipment (main subsections: air or vacuum pumps, air or other gas compressors and fans and steam or other vapor generating boilers ) completed the top three with a share of 3.7% and exports totaling EUR million. There were three other product groups that also accounted for a share of more than 1.0% in total Belgian exports of goods to India. These sections were: plastics: EUR million or a share of 3.0%; base metals: EUR million or a share of 1.9% and optical instruments: EUR million or a share of 1.4%. The 3.9% increase in total Belgian exports to India was however primarily the result of the increase in precious stones and metals (+6.6% or +EUR million). This can be attributed to higher exports of diamonds, whether or not worked, but not mounted or set. Optical instruments (+9.4% or +EUR 9.8 million) were the only other product group from the graph above that registered a rise in exports. 6.6% 9.4% 12.0% Precious stones and metals Chemical products Machinery and equipment Plastics Base metals Optical instruments The largest percentage decrease was recorded by plastics. Because of lower exports of polymers of vinyl chloride or of other halogenated olefins, in primary forms, this particular product group was down by 17.7% (-EUR 51.8 million). The two remaining product groups that displayed a negative growth rate were machinery & equipment (-9.4% or -EUR 31.2 million) and base metals (-13.3% or -EUR 23.5 million). While the value of this last product group dropped because of lower exports of flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel, the exported quantity was still up. This was because of higher exports of ferrous waste and scrap, but this only had a very limited impact on the evolution of the value

3.1. TRADE IN GOODS IMPORTS In 2016, precious stones and metals took first place in total Belgian imports of goods from India. With a total of EUR 1,812.0 million, this group of products represented a share of 41.5%. Imports of this section were primarily composed of diamonds, whether or not worked but not mounted or set. Imports of base metals (main subsection: flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel ) amounted to EUR million or a share of 12.0%. Chemical products, which were composed primarily of medicaments consisting of mixed or unmixed products for therapeutic or prophylactic uses, cyclic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic compounds with nitrogen hetero-atom(s) only, completed the top three with a share of 11.8% or EUR million in imports. Textiles were the only other product group with a share of more than 5.0% in imports. The value of this group of products amounted to EUR million or a share of 10.0%. The value of this product group grew from EUR 97.9 million in 2015 to EUR million in 2016 due to higher imports of petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals. The other product groups of which imports increased, recorded a growth rate that varied from 1.0% (chemical products) to 36.6% (base metals). The rise of this last product group can be attributed in large part to higher imports of flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel. The value of precious stones and metals, Belgium s main import section from India, was down by 0.5% (-EUR 9.7 million). The imported quantity on the other hand recorded a significant increase because of higher imports of imitation jewellery. However, this particular product group only had a very limited impact on the value. Imports of animal products fell from EUR million to EUR 98.0 million between 2015 and 2016, which is a decrease of 24.2%. The reason why the value of this particular product group was down, had to do with lower imports of crustaceans. Vegetable products (-7.9% or -EUR 9.5 million) were the only other product group from the top ten that displayed a negative growth rate. Since imports of four of the five major sections were up, total Belgian imports of goods from India grew by 5.8% in value in

3.1. TRADE IN GOODS GENERAL PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT OF THE TRADE IN GOODS AFTER THE FIRST SIX MONTHS OF 2017 EXPORTS IMPORTS According to the data available for 2017, Belgian exports of goods to India totaled EUR 4.4 billion after the first six months. This is 0.9% (-EUR 38.0 million) less than after the equivalent period of Precious metals and stones were still firmly in first place after the first semester of 2017 despite a drop in exports of 2.1% (-EUR 77.7 million). This group of products represented an amount of EUR 3,558.8 million, good for 81.0% of total exports. Exports of chemicals grew by 14.9% (+EUR 29.3 million) in value in 2017 (first six months), reaching EUR million or a 5.1% share. With EUR million, the machinery and equipment section completed the top three list of Belgium s exports of goods to India. Thanks to a 3.4% increase (+EUR 5.2 million), this group of products accounted for 3.6% of total exports. Belgian imports of goods from India amounted to EUR 2.6 billion after the first six months of This is a 13.2% (+EUR million) increase in comparison to the same period of 2016, when imports reached a total of EUR 2.3 billion. After the first semester of 2017, imports of precious stones and metals remained in first place with 33.6% or EUR million. Imports of this particular group of products were down by 18.4% (-EUR million). The imported value of base metals was up by 210.2% (+EUR million). After the first six months of 2017, this group of products represented an amount of EUR million or 22.3% of total Belgian imports from India. Imports of chemicals rose from EUR million after the first semester of 2016 to EUR million after the equivalent period of this year. They were responsible for 11.2% of total imports

3. BILATERAL TRADE RELATIONS 3.2. TRADE IN SERVICES In 2016, Belgian exports of services to India were down by 15.7% in value, decreasing from EUR million to EUR million. This made India the 36 th major client of Belgium after Hungary but before Greece with a share of 0.3% in total Belgian exports of services. Belgian imports of services from India represented EUR million in 2016, a 1.9% drop when compared to the year before. India was Belgium s 26 th major supplier of services in 2016 with a share of 0.4%. It ranked before Hungary, but after Hong Kong. EVOLUTION OF BELGIUM S TRADE IN SERVICES WITH INDIA IN MILLION EXPORTS IMPORTS TRADE BALANCE EXPORTS: VARIATION IN % IMPORTS: VARIATION IN % Since imports of services from India outperformed exports to this country during the period , Belgium s services trade balance with India was negative for our country during the entire period under review. The deficit on the services trade balance, which amounted to EUR million in 2014, dropped slightly to EUR million in 2015 because exports rose by a higher amount than imports. In 2016, exports dropped at a significantly faster rate than imports, which caused the deficit to once again increase to EUR million. The negative services balance of the last three years stands in contrast to the balance of goods, which is traditionally in favour of our country

INDEX The table below gives an overview of the evolution of the index of the unit price in imports and exports for Belgium (with the world). EXPORTS IMPORTS INDEX OF THE UNIT PRICE IN IMPORTS AND EXPORTS Thanks to this index, the general evolution of the price of goods can be analyzed. This makes it possible to see the global evolution of Belgian imports and exports in perspective by determining the part which is caused by the price evolution (and hence which part is caused by a change in quantity). The table has to be interpreted as follows: If a given product had an export value of EUR 100 in the year 2010, then this product had an average value of EUR in The same principle goes for imports. If a particular product had an import value of EUR 100 in 2010, the same product had an import value of EUR in
