4 Report of the Trustees for the year ended 30 September 2016 The Trustees are pleased to present their report together with the financial statements of the Society for the year ended 30 September Legal and Charitable Status The British Society for Paediatric Dermatology ( the Society ), was established by Constitution in 1987, is a recognised English Charity (No ) and a recognised Scottish Charity (No. SC038025). Aims The Society aims to stimulate and promote appropriate medical and scientific research and to publish the results of such research; to contribute to the education of trainees in dermatology and of scientific workers in the field of dermatology; to arrange and provide for the holding of scientific meetings and symposia; and to raise funds. Office Bearers The Trustees and office bearers who served during the year and to the date of this report were: Trustees (appointed 1 October 2015) President (appointed 1 October 2015) Honorary Secretary (appointed 1 October 2015) Honorary Treasurer Recruitment and Appointment of Trustees All Trustees are appointed or reappointed by the executive committee members at our Annual General Meeting which is held in November each year. Review of the Period The BSPD continues to be one of the largest affiliated groups within the BAD with membership consisting mainly of consultant and trainee dermatologists but also paediatricians and geneticists. The aims of the society are to support education and training in paediatric dermatology and to encourage research and this is achieved through educational meetings and Fellowships. The BSPD continues to thrive with an increasing membership. The BSPD currently has 265 members. Membership benefits include receipt of the monthly journal Pediatric Dermatology. Details of the Society are available on the website Each year the Society holds three educational meetings, which are very well attended. The abstracts of all meetings are published. Monetary prizes are awarded to trainees for best presentations. In addition, all trainees who are first authors on presented papers are awarded a discounted registration fee for the autumn annual symposium. Page 2

5 Report of the Trustees for the year ended 30 September 2016 Review of the Period (continued) The BSPD session at the BAD meeting was held in Birmingham on 7th July The guest lectures were given by, The Barrier in Atopic Dermatitis, and by, Contemporary weaning of the eczematious infant. from Nottingham University Teaching Hospitals was awarded the prize for best paper for her presentation, Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis, Lessons from the skin. also from Nottingham University Teaching Hospitals received the prize for best poster, Early Recognition and Detection of Juvenile Psoriatic Arthritis. The BSPD 30 th Annual Symposium and AGM was held in Oxford in 2015 hosted by. Lecture topics included; Blistering Disorders in Children ( ), Paediatric Vulval Disease ), Dermoscopy in Children ( ), Teledetmatology ), Atopic Dermatitis ( ), and Hair Disorders in Children ( ). The submitted presentations were of a very high standard. The prize for best presentation was awarded to for Pigmentary Mosaicism in Children, A review of clinical features and associations and the prize for best case report to for The successful use of Ustekinumab for severe refractory atopic dermatitis in a teenager. The best poster to, cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Children; experience from a specialist centre. The BSPD session at the RCPCH Spring Meeting took place at Liverpool ICC in April The session was run jointly with the British Society of Paediatric and Adolescent Rheumatology (BSPAR). Invited talks were given by, The skin and joints a combined approach,, Skin signs in inflammatory Disease, and Pain, Behçets Disease in children; more than mouth ulcers. For the first time there was also an education session aimed at paediatricians which was very well attended. Lectures were given by, How to Approach Blistering neonates,, Common Baby rashes and birthmarks, and, A quick guide to managing childhood eczema. EADV Fellowships: The BSPD provides annual awards of 500 through the EADY to enable two European dermatologists to attend the Annual Symposium. from Russia and from Bulgaria were the successful candidates for the 2015 symposium. BSPD training fellowship: A Fellowship of 2,000 is available to all trainee members of the BSPD who wish to spend some time either in research or in training in paediatric dermatology. This year it was not awarded as none of the applications were deemed of a suitable standard. Paediatric Dermatology training: The JRCPTB approved pilots of post-cct fellowships in Paediatric Dermatology are now complete. The BAD Education Unit has now taken over the governance of these curricula. Assessment is based on the curriculum produced by the BSPD and agreed by the SAC. The curriculum will be reviewed each year by BSPD and the BAD Education Unit, and the BSPD will be involved in the assessment process of all posts. Page 3

6 Report of the Trustees for the year ended 30 September 2016 Review of the Period (continued) Executive Committee members: Trainee Committee members: This committee was terminated at the meeting at the BAD on the 7 th July This was due to the transferred regulation of the Advanced Paediatric Dermatology Curriculum to the Education Unit at the BAD. Financial Overview The Receipts and Payments Account on page 6 reflects an excess of receipts over payments for the year of 9,772 (2015: 371). Reserves As a result of the excess of receipts over payments of 9,772 the Society held unrestricted funds of 96,077 at the year-end. This will enable the Society to continue its activities in pursuit of the above aims in the forthcoming year. Trustees' Responsibilities The Trustees are required to prepare financial statements for each period which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the Society as at the end of the period and of the surplus or deficit for the period. In preparing the financial statements, the Trustees are required to select appropriate accounting policies and apply them consistently, and make judgements and estimates which are reasonable and prudent. The Trustees are responsible for maintaining adequate accounting records, for safeguarding the assets of the Society, and for preventing and detecting fraud and other irregularities. 7 Independent Examiner s Report to the Trustees I report on the financial statements for the year ended 30 September 2016 set out on pages 6 and 7. Responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner The charity s Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements. The charity s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) or under Regulation 10 (1) (d) of The Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (the 2006 Accounts Regulations) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to: examine the financial statements under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 and section 44 (1) (c) of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 (the 2005 Act); to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. Basis of Independent Examiner s Statement My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission and is in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the financial statements presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the financial statements, and seeking explanations from you as Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a true and fair view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below. Independent Examiner s Statement In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: 1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act and section 44 (1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations; and to prepare financial statements which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act and section 44 (1) (b) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 9 of the 2006 Regulations have not been met; or 2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.
