PLOT chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan said during the Smart Unbox event that an additional budget allocation of $100 million was requested on top of the P43 billion capex announced earlier. The additional allocation is being used for the utilization of new frequencies after acquiring half of San Miguel Corp. 's telco assets in May. 'So our spend this year on capex is likely to be in the neighborhood of P48 billion or a little over $1 billion in order to ensure that the transformation of the network would proceed... to a purely data network starting this year, ' Pangilinan said. PLOT is spending the capex to improve data coverage and capacity to deliver a wide array of digital services to cater to customers' needs. We confirm that PLDT's capex for 2016 is estimated to be approximately P48 billion. Our original capex guidance for 2016 was P43 billion (disclosed to the Exchange and the investing public on 29 February 2016). As part of the disclosure to the Exchange on 30 May 2016 regarding the acquisition of San Miguel Corporation's (SMC's) telecommunications businesses, we advised that we expect to spend an additional US$100 million or approximately P5 billion in capex this year to allow PLDT to accelerate the roll out of telco services using the frequencies acquired from SMC. This will help enhance our current networks and increase capacity resulting in faster and improved data services.
