3 SECTION 1: CONTEXT 1.1 INTRODUCTION At each June and December Graduation, the Institutional Planning Department conducts the graduate Exit Survey that forms part of the First Destinations Project. The First Destinations Project examines the post-graduation activities and intentions of each group of graduates in order to assess recent graduates impressions of the usefulness and applicability of their studies in the workplace, coupled with information on how and where recent graduates either found employment or chose to continue their studies. The first Graduate Exit Surveys were carried out amongst the June 1997 group of graduates, and these surveys now form a routine part of the graduation proceedings. In this report, the findings of the Exit Survey for December 2008 graduates are discussed. 1.2 SURVEY INSTRUMENT In order to compare the results of this survey with the results from previous exit surveys, the structure has remained relatively constant since the pilot study was conducted in June The survey instrument consists largely of closed type questions and was designed to comply with the following criteria: short completion time (about 5 minutes) so as to prevent bottleneck formation in the ticket and gowns distributions process; the return of a permanent postal address for each graduate to be used in the follow-up surveys, and the return of a student number for each graduate/ diplomat which enables the retrieval of additional information (e.g. biographic data and academic performance information) from an MS SQL Server 2005 database (which derives from PeopleSoft 9). the establishment of the main activity of each graduate after graduation (i.e. employment, further study, etc) and obtaining details on the employers of the graduates and the nature of further studies that they had embarked upon gaining insight with regard to graduates impressions of their learning experience at UCT and their participation in the career development activities offered by the Careers Service whilst at UCT. The questionnaire is printed on A3 paper, folded to form an A4 size leaflet. On the front page of this leaflet, a brief congratulatory letter and explanation of the Graduate Recruitment Portal is printed. A Thank-you note to the respondent follows the last item on the questionnaire. 1.3 SURVEY METHOD The survey questionnaire was administered to graduates at the point of ticket/gown collection prior to each graduation ceremony. This is now the usual procedure that the Institutional Planning Department uses for the Graduate Exit surveys. Each graduate (up to and including the Doctorate level) was asked to complete a questionnaire (at one of a series of tables provided for this purpose) and to hand this in at the graduation ticket tables, prior to receiving his/her tickets. Where graduates Page 1
4 did not personally collect their tickets and gowns, the person collecting tickets on their behalf was given a blank questionnaire and a postage paid envelope with instructions for the actual graduate to complete and return the questionnaire. A total of 4305 UCT students completed their studies and graduated in December Of these, 65% completed the Exit Questionnaire in December. The response rates varied considerably from faculty to faculty, and in relation to the different qualifications within each faculty 1. As can be seen in Table 1c in Section 2 on Findings, the highest response rates were recorded amongst Post Graduate Bachelor graduates (80%) and Professional First Bachelor graduates (78%) and the lowest response rates were recorded amongst Masters (41%), PG Diplomas (49%) and Honours graduates (52%). The survey responses were coded and captured into an MS Excel spreadsheet, which was imported into the Student Performance Database. Using the student numbers which had been entered on the completed questionnaires, the following additional information was extracted from the database for each respondent: biographic data (population group, gender and date of birth); matric information (school code, matric authority, matric points and faculty points); a synopsis of each respondent s UCT academic record from which the date on which they commenced their degree/diploma, their final year majors (where applicable), their final year course results and information on prior qualifications completed at UCT. This additional data was used in the computation of data in the following field: average % in final year. In the analysis below, information captured in the survey responses is discussed and correlated (where applicable) with this additional information. 1 The survey response rates within each formal qualification, within each faculty, are presented in the individual faculty summaries that are published as separate reports. Page 2
5 SECTION 2: 2008 FINDINGS A summary of the survey findings in relation to the formal qualification type and graduation faculty is presented in Addendum A that can be found at the end of this report. The findings reflect the combined results of the surveys for the December 2008 Graduations. Please note that in this report the faculties referred to are in the abbreviated form: COM for the Faculty of Commerce, EBE for the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, HEA for the Faculty of Health Sciences, HUM for the Faculty of Humanities, LAW for the Faculty of Law and SCI for the Faculty of Science. SECTION 3: ANALYSIS The analysis covers major differences, of more than 5%, between findings for the 2007 survey report and this 2008 survey for tables 3, 10 (i), 10 (ii) and 10 (iii) so that the differences in first destinations and student satisfaction can be highlighted. Because of the danger of small numbers the report will focus only on differences in the following sub-categories: Three Year Bachelors in Commerce, EBE, Humanities and Science Professional First Bachelor in EBE, Humanities and Health Science Honours in Commerce, EBE, Humanities and Science TABLE 3: FIRST DESTINATION The analysis shows the proportion of Commerce Three Year Bachelor respondents indicating Seeking Study as their first destination increased by 7% when comparing 2008 respondents (21%) with the 2007 respondents (14%). The proportion of EBE Three Year Bachelor respondents indicating Seeking Study decreased by 9%as well as those stating Employed. This decrease occurs parallel to an increase in those respondents seeking employment (15% more) as well as respondents who did not indicate their first destination (7%). With the Humanities respondents, there was a decrease of 5% for those choosing Studying. At the same time, an increase occurred for Humanities respondents choosing Seeking Study (3%) and those seeking employment (2%). There was an increase of 6% from EBE Professional Bachelor students stating Employed as their first destination. This increase occurs at the same time as a 6% drop in respondents choosing Studying. In Humanities there was a 13% drop in Seeking Employ (from 14 respondents in 2007 to 9 respondents in 2008), a 6% increase in Seeking Study and a 5% increase in Employed was noted. In EBE, there is a 24% decrease in employed respondents (from 26 in 2007, to 22 in 2008) while an 8% increase in those respondents seeking employment was also noted. In Humanities there was an increase of 5% in Studying at the same time as an 8% decrease of those respondents choosing Seeking Study. For Science, there was a 10% decrease in Employed and an 8 % decrease in Studying running parallel to an 11% increase in Seeking Study and a 9% increase in respondents who did not state their first destination. There were no overall major shifts within qualifications for those respondents Seeking Study. Throughout the satisfaction tables, there were only significant overall shifts in the grand totals of the respondents with regard to satisfaction with preparation for further study. These shifts include a large 14% more students who stated that UCT armed them with Excellent Preparation for further study and 12% less who indicated that UCT provided them with Adequate Preparation.
