3 The Bank Operations Institute (BOI) leads the field in preparing community bankers for banking in the 21st Century. Guided by the industry s top regulators and educators, BOI builds its program around moving operations officers from the back room to the boardroom. Here the emphasis is on practical, real-world issues and solutions. BOI takes students through the nuts and bolts of operations to a new level of strategic thinking and presentation. This is a two year program that provides the practical management and leadership techniques necessary for successful community bank operations. The dynamic curriculum is monitored by regulators and bankers and offers strategic insight into both the present and future of banking technology, processes and project management. Students from a multi-state area attend BOI for one week each fall for two years. The program is taught by noted regulators, bankers, educators and professionals with an emphasis on the practical skills needed for effective and profitable operational management. 5 The BOI Experience Value Proposition Imagine six days spent each year for two years on the lush Southern Methodist University Campus in Dallas. Students gain a thorough understanding of banking operations: from uniform bank performance reports, simulation models, project management experiential modules, investment and interest risk management to new fraud reduction product and tools on the horizon. In short, BOI is the launching pad from which high-potential managers learn what makes the bottom line function so they can measure the effectiveness of their decisions. Ultimately, this powerful school helps lift operations professionals to the upper echelons of banking management in a knowledge-based economy. BOI describes the bank operations and the regulatory environment. BOI explains the factors affecting bank performance and profitability. BOI develops skills for strategic planning and project management. BOI outlines the legal aspects of banking especially operational and compliance issues. BOI discusses and develops an understanding of human resource functions. BOI measures the impact of marketing and cross-selling. BOI prepares students with skills for effective presentations to the Boards of Directors. Classes are held at the Edwin L. Cox School of Business, which Business Week and others consistently rank as one of the nation s top-tier business schools. Allied with the Cox School, you benefit not only from BOI s reputation, but also from its first-rate facilities and staff, and the reputation of the SW Graduate School of Banking. At BOI, instruction is characterized by small classes, high faculty-student interaction, leadership development, state of the art visual aids, materials and classrooms. The Program Content In a series of informative lectures, case studies and interactive class exercises, you will become proficient in a number of key managerial areas that govern the operational aspects of community banking. Attendees benefit from the skills listed and the banks benefit from greater operational efficiencies, enhanced regulatory compliance, and a greater awareness of income opportunities driven from the operational side of the bank. Who Should Attend? Operations and lending officers who need to develop and perfect managerial competencies and techniques around the operations of community banking. This includes cashiers, operations officers and head tellers transitioning into management, loan officers, branch managers, future chief financial officers and supervisory/management personnel. Program Dates and Fees The 34th session of BOI will be held Sunday, October 12 Friday, October 17. Space is limited. The $1975 enrollment fee represents the best value in banking education today and compares favorably with other banking programs. It includes tuition and most meals for six days, course notebook and all handout materials. Meals include opening banquet on Sunday, lunches daily in the Umphrey Lee Cafeteria on SMU Campus, closing graduation luncheon, and informal dinners on two evenings, plus all breaks throughout the week.
