3 The Millennium Development Goals Millennium Declaration In 2000, 189 nations made a promise to free people from extreme poverty and multiple deprivations. This pledge turned into the eight Millennium Development Goals.

6 Measuring the goals Careful tracking of the goals is necessary to ensure that they are met. There is significant statistical calculations made that I do not understand! The UN analyses its own data collected to measure the success of programs being implemented. Some targets have already been achieved while others have only been achieved in certain regions. Some targets such as under 5 mortality rate, are very behind on the deadline.

There are many issues with the goals, and their ability to continue improving the lives of people past A lot of the data is difficult to collect which means that the accuracy of the targets can be questioned. While millions of dollars in aid are being directed to the poorest countries to help with meeting the goals, most of the money unfortunately has gone towards debt relief, rather than improvements. Although countries pledged to donate 0.7% of their GNI, many countries are not, including Australia. It has in fact, fallen below ratios in 1990.

11 Improving slum dwellers lives According to the UN, Target 7.D (To achieve, by 2020, a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers) was met well in advance of the 2020 deadline. PROOF Success The share of urban slum residents in the developing world declined from 39 per cent in 2000 to 33 per cent in BUT. The actual number of people living in slums seems to be increasing. Almost 1 billion estimated in 2012 compared to 650 million in 1990 and 760 million in 2000 Success More than 200 million of these people gained access to improved water sources, improved sanitation facilities, or durable or less crowded housing, thereby exceeding the MDG target BUT. During the same time, 100 million new slum dwellers swelled cities' ranks. In retrospect, formulating this target in terms of absolute numbers rather than the overall proportion of a dynamic and changing total was problematic.
