2 8:30-9:00am Registration / Breakfast Annual Trustee Educational Conference Wednesday, June 3, :30-11:00am ERISA Information All Trustees Need to Know The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) had its 40th anniversary last September. The legislation promised security in retirement but has fallen short of is expectations. While millions have benefited from retirement income they have not benefited from security. There are calls to improve ERISA so that seniors have greater security and the legislation lives up to its original promise. This session will review ERISA to date and what might be changed in the future. This session will also review investment guidelines, trustee ethics, and the fiduciary responsibilities of trustees. Steve Sanders who serves as chairman, chief investment strategist, and portfolio manager with Stonebridge Investment Partners has over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry and will review how past and current pension fund issues are encouraging pension fund reform. 11:00 11:15am Break 11:15 12:15pm An Overview of Pension Reform Across the Country In this session there will be a review of changes seen in many pension funds, why these changes occurred, and a likely direction of the future. Kevin Leonard, partner with NEPC, LLC will present this overview of what is driving so many of these changes. Simms General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer FIS Group 1:30-2:30pm How to Run Board and Committee Meetings Being a trustee on a pension fund board is a serious undertaking. Trustees are given an enormous amount of responsibility, which is subject to some of the highest standards under the law. But it s not a nine-to-five job. Meetings are the only venue for getting the work done, typically a couple of hours once a month. Some pension boards meet once a quarter. Therefore, it is important that trustees have effective, efficient, well - planned board and committee meetings so they can use their limited time wisely. David Wetzel, senior vice president of the Fund Evaluation Group will lead this discussion on how to best conduct effective meetings. Pamela Robertson, a partner with Squire Patten Boggs will inform us on the importance of transparency and the benefits of this education. 2:30 3:30pm The Legal Responsibilities and Accountabilities of Pension Fund Trustees Attorney and Maryland State Pension and Retirement System Trustee Thurman Zollicoffer will discuss the legal requirements and responsibilities of pension fund trustees.
