Save for a Secure Future Social Security is the foundation for a secure retirement, but you also will need other savings and investments. If you want to learn more about how and why to save, visit 2
A Foundation for Planning Your Future OTHER INCOME SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS PENSION SOCIAL SECURITY 3
Who Gets Benefits from Social Security? 56 million people 8.6 million Disabled Workers and 2.0 million Dependents 4.4 million Widows/Widowers 1.9 million Children of Deceased Workers 36 million Retired Workers and 2.9 million Dependents 4
Who Pays for Social Security? Today s Workers & Today s Beneficiaries Employers 5
How Do You Qualify for Retirement Benefits? Ø You need to work to earn Social Security credits Ø Each $ 1,130 in earnings gives you one credit Ø You can earn a maximum of 4 credits per year Example: To earn 4 credits in 2012, you must earn at least $ 4,520. Earning 40 credits (10 years of work) throughout your working life will qualify you for a retirement benefit. 6
Thinking of Retiring? Ø Deciding what is the right age to retire Ø How working after retirement can affect benefits Ø Medicare considerations Ø Online retirement estimator Ø How to apply online for benefits 7
Your Age at the Time You Elect Retirement Benefits Affects the Amount For example, if you were born from 1943 through 1954: Ø Age 62 75% of benefit Ø Age 66 Ø Age % of benefit 132% of benefit 8
In Addition to the Retiree, Who Else Can Get Benefits? Your Child Ø Not married under 18 (under 19 if still in high school) Ø Not married and disabled before age 22 Your Spouse Ø Age 62 or older Ø At any age, if caring for a child under age 16 or disabled 9
In Addition to the Retiree, Who Else Can Get Benefits? Your Ex-Spouse Ø Marriage lasted at least 10 years Ø Ex-spouse 62 or older Ø Divorced at least two years and you and your ex-spouse are at least 62, he or she can get benefits even if you are not retired Ø Ex-spouse s benefit amount has no effect on the amount you or your current spouse can get 10
Spouse s Benefit Computation Ø Benefit is 50% of worker s unreduced benefit Ø Reduction for early retirement Ø If spouse s own benefit is less than 50% of the worker s, the benefits are combined Ø Does not reduce payment to worker 11
Full Retirement Age Year of Birth Full Retirement Age 1937 or earlier & 2 months & 4 months & 6 months & 8 months & 10 months & 2 months & 4 months & 6 months & 8 months & 10 months 1960 or later 67 12
How Social Security Determines Your Benefit Social Security benefits are based on earnings Ø Step 1 -Your wages are adjusted for changes in wage levels over time Ø Step 2 -Find the monthly average of your 35 highest earnings years Ø Step 3 -Result is average indexed monthly earnings 13 26
2012 Retirement Benefit Computation Example If your average monthly earnings are = $ 5,200 Then your monthly benefit would be = $ 2,010 Average Monthly Earnings $ 5,200 90% of First $ 767 = $ % of Earnings over $ 767 through $ 4,624 $ 3,857 = $ 1,234 ( $ 4,624- $ 767= $ 3,857) 15% of Earnings over $ 4,624 $ 576 = $86 $ 2,010 $ 5,200 14
Windfall Elimination Provision If any part of your pension is based on work not covered by Social Security, you may be affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision
Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) Normal Computation WEP Computation 90% of the First $ % of the First $ % of the Next $ 3,857 32% of the Next $ 3,857 15% of the Remainder 15% of the Remainder 16
Exception to the Windfall Elimination Provision Years of Social % of First Factor Security Coverage in Benefit Formula 30 or more or fewer 40 Our Online WEP calculator allows you to estimate your Social Security benefit. 17
Government Pension Offset (GPO) If you receive a government pension based on work not covered by Social Security, your Social Security spouse s or widow(er) s benefits may be reduced. 18
Government Pension Offset (GPO) Applies to Spouse s Benefits Only Ø 2/3 of amount of government pension will be used to reduce the Social Security spouse s benefits Example: Ø $1,200 of government pension 2/3 = $800 Social Security spouse s benefits = $750 No benefit payable by Social Security Ø Our Online GPO calculator allows you to estimate your Social Security benefit. 19
Two Important Points If have 40 or more credits, you ll definitely get a SS check. If have paid SS taxes for fewer than 30 years, benefit will be reduced (and SS statement is incorrect). 20
Two Additional Important Points If you leave your spouse a survivor s benefit from your public pension, that benefit doesn t reduce your spouse s own Social Security. In fact, your survivor s potential benefits are higher than the benefit you will receive. 21
You Can Work & Still Receive Benefits You Can If You Make More, If You Are Make Up To Some Benefits Will Be Withheld Under Full Retirement Age $ 14,640/yr. ( $ 1,220/mo.) $ 1 for every $ 2 The Year Full Retirement Age is Reached $ 38,880/yr. ( $ 3,240/mo.) $ 1 for every $ 3 Month of Full Retirement Age and Above No Limit No Limit Note: If some of your retirement benefits are withheld because of your earnings, your benefits will be increased starting at your full retirement age to take into account those months in which benefits were withheld. 22
Your Benefits Can Be Taxable Ø About 1/3 of people who get Social Security pay income taxes on their benefits. Ø At the end of each year, you ll receive a Social Security Benefit Statement (Form SSA-1099). Use this statement to complete your Federal income tax return to find out if you have to pay taxes on your benefit. 23
How Do I Apply for Retirement Benefits? Ø Apply online at It is the most convenient way to apply; Ø Call Social Security to schedule an appointment (TTY ); or Ø Apply at your local Social Security office. 24
Social Security s Online Services Online Services for before or after you receive benefits Ø Social Security Statement Ø Retirement & Disability Applications Ø Medicare Online Ø Apply for Extra Help With Medicare Drug Plan Costs Ø Retirement/Survivors/Disability Planner Ø Change of Address Ø Medicare Card Replacements Ø Request a Benefit Verification Letter Ø Start or Change Direct Deposit Ø WEP and GPO Calculators 25
