3 ELIGIBILITY: Continuing Education programs are open to residents of Hicksville and neighboring communities who are at least 18 years old. REGISTRATION: REGISTRATION AND GENERAL INFORMATION You may register by mail immediately upon receipt of flyer. Please, send a separate registration form and check for each class and person registering. Extra registrations can be written on a separate paper that lists each additional person s name, address, phone, and information. Send a separate check for each person on that list. We will contact you by the number provided on the registration form if there is a cancellation. Registrations will be accepted up to the first day of class as long as there are openings in the class and it has not been cancelled due to low enrollment. Walk-in registrations will be accepted beginning March 4 th, at the Continuing Education Office: Hicksville High School (Room 105), Monday-Thursday from 3:30-7:30 p.m. Please, call Monday-Thursday from 3:30-7:30 p.m. with questions. MINIMUM REGISTRATION: Adult programs must operate on a self-supporting basis, so a minimum number of students is required in order to conduct a course. If enrollment is inadequate, the class will be cancelled, and you will be contacted prior to the first day of class. PAYMENT: CHECKS ONLY that are made out to Hicksville Public Schools. FEES: Course fees are listed within descriptions. Non-residents pay an additional $15.00 per course except for one-day classes. 3 ADDITIONAL EXCEPTIONS: Some classes also require supply or other fees to be paid, as noted in descriptions. REFUNDS: The full registration fee will be refunded only when a class is full or cancelled. CLOSINGS: If schools are closed or dismissed early due to inclement weather, Continuing Education classes will not be held. The district calendar lists the holiday schedule. CLASS CANCELLATIONS: Teachers are responsible for contacting all students if they need to cancel a class. A make-up class will be provided. SENIOR CITIZENS: Hicksville senior citizens (age 60 or older) are eligible for free tuition or a reduced fee for many courses as listed in course description. There are no senior discounts for one-day and new classes. Out of district seniors may be eligible for a discount for certain classes. Please call the office ( ) for exact details. LOCATION: Please, note that all room numbers are subject to change due to building events or circumstances beyond our control. Check with the Continuing Education Office (High School Room 105) prior to the start of your class. A RETIREMENT INCOME PRIMER Thursday, March 14 th 7:00 8:00 p.m. 1 session Instructor: Vince Perrota * No discounts for one-day class Social Security will likely be the foundation of your retirement income. Before you retire, it s important to understand your options regarding Social Security and the impact your decisions have on your retirement. We ll discuss how Social Security fits into your retirement income plan, when you should start taking benefits, and tax considerations. We will also examine how to budget for retirement expenses and your potential sources of retirement income, as well as how to identify risks to your retirement income and ways to address those risks. This class would be best suited for people who are nearing retirement. This workshop is designed to help sharpen your spending and saving strategy and is appropriate for all investors. You ll learn more about the basics of budgeting and the importance of managing credit and debt. Once you have a picture of your investing goals, you ll need a strategy to help you get there. We ll explore the tools and strategies that are available to assist you and your family in working toward your financial goals and we ll help you feel more comfortable with the investing process. 4 PREPARING YOUR ESTATE PLAN AND SCRIPT YOUR FAMILY S FUTURE: WHY YOU NEED AN ESTATE PLAN Thursday, April 11 th NEW! 7:00 8:30 1 session Instructor: Vince Perrota * No discounts for one day class Do you know where your assets will go when you die? If not, this seminar will help familiarize you with the basic steps of estate planning, including the function of a will and the different types of trusts. MEDICAID-FUNDED ASSISTED LIVING THE BEST KEPT SECRET Wednesday, May 1 st 6:30-8:30 1 session Instructor: Robin Marks * No discounts for one day class Typical assisted living communities are beyond the financial reach of most people. With Medicaid funding, they become an affordable, desirable option. The Assisted Living Program (ALP) is designed to allow aging in place so that residents do not have to worry about outliving their money. In fact, it s a great goal. You will learn about the original Medicare Plan, Medicare Supplement Plans, Medicare Advantage Plans, and Prescription Drug Plans. We will highlight the changes for 2019 and you ll have the opportunity to get answers to your questions. Julie Ward-Abdo is a national health insurance coordinator from Senior Health Plan Finder, an independent agency specializing in Medicare Health Insurance plans. The company assists hundreds of seniors and retirees yearly addressing questions, concerns and educating them about the benefits they are entitled in seminars in senior centers, libraries, schools, and offices throughout the tri-state area. Incidents of fraud are on the rise and scammers are becoming more skilled. This presentation will provide you the information you need to help yourself Outsmart the Scammers. You ve worked hard to provide for your family. Whether you re approaching retirement or have recently retired, your focus may begin to shift from building your financial foundation to protecting the financial resources you ve created for you and your family. This presentation discusses proactive ways to address key risks you may encounter and strategies to help prepare for the unexpected. During the program, we ll discuss how to spot certain red flags that may indicate a fraudulent encounter, resources that you can turn to in the event you or loved ones are targeted, and steps you can take now to help protect yourself and those for whom you care. This class would be of interest to all investors and is especially suitable for investors who are thinking of retiring or who have retired recently. You may park for classes on Division Avenue or behind the High School. You must enter the building through the main lobby. There is NO PARKING in handicapped parking spaces between blue lines (unless you have a valid permit) or along red curbs. Violators will be ticketed by Nassau County Police. 7 VOLLEYBALL Physical Fitness Mondays beginning March 11 th 7:30-9:30 p.m. 8 weeks Instructor: Ernie Papadoulias Cost: $60/Senior Citizen fee FREE Room: Middle School Gyms Men and women of all ages are welcome to this popular recreational class. The focus will be on continuous play. Rules and techniques will be discussed as needed. COURSES AVAILABLE IN EAST MEADOW For residents of Hicksville taking courses at East Meadow, all non-resident fees are waived except where indicated. These courses are not free to senior citizens. YOGA Tuesdays beginning March 12 th 7:00-8:00 p.m. 8 weeks Instructor: Mary Saramak Cost: $65/Senior Citizen fee $40 Room: Middle School Boys Gym The class starts with gentle warm up stretches and continues with meditative techniques, breathing, and yoga postures. Participants are asked to make note of the following: Please, do not eat for at least 2 hours before class. Wear loose clothing. Please, leave perfume and jewelry at home. Now 8 weeks! Bring an authentic yoga mat and a towel to each class. Be prepared to lie on the floor and do rolls on their backs and necks.
