1 Husband s Unemployment and Wife s Labor Supply The Added Worker Effect across Europe Julia Bredtmann a,b Sebastian Otten a,b Christian Rulff a a Ruhr-University Bochum b RWI Essen 3 rd European User Conference for EU-SILC and EU-LFS March 22, 2013
2 Introduction Introduction The Added Worker Effect refers to an increase in the labor supply of women due to their husband s unemployment. It has been investigated in various studies (e.g., Lundberg, 1985; Spletzer, 1997; Stephens, 2002), but mixed results have been produced. Cross-country evidence on the existence of the Added Worker Effect is scarce (e.g., McGinnity, 2002, comparing Britain and West Germany; and Prieto-Rodríǵguez, Rodríǵguez-Gutiéérrez, 2000, for 11 european countries). Bredtmann, Otten, Rulff (RUB, RWI) Added Worker Effect March 22, / 13
3 Theoretical Framework Theoretical Framework The Added Worker Effect can be justified as a simple manner from the labor-leisure choice. Considers a traditional family, in which the wife is out of the labor force and the husband is employed. The husband becomes unemployed and receives a benefit below his labor income. This reduction in the household income reduces the wife s non-labor income. This lowers the shadow price of the wife s non-market time and should raise her probability to enter the labor market. Bredtmann, Otten, Rulff (RUB, RWI) Added Worker Effect March 22, / 13
4 Data and Econometric Framework Sample Data: EU-SILC Longitudinal version of the EU-SILC data ( ). The sample is restricted to married or cohabiting couples, who live in the same household and are aged between 16 and 65. We only consider couples in which the husband was employed and the wife was out of the labor force in the previous year. This leads to 69,410 person-year observations. 13 Conclusion Conclusion In a pooled regression for all countries, the Added Worker Effect seems to be present and countercyclical. The result is mainly driven by wives changes from inactivity to unemployment. Subsample regressions for 5 country groups reveal that the effect is most prevalent among the Mediterranean countries. Except for the Continental European and the Anglo-Saxon countries, women start looking for a job when their husbands become unemployed.
