1 CFB Kingston Commissionaires PSAC Local 818 News Letter # 2 This Newsletter is from your Executive This News letter is to keep you informed of what is happening in the local 818. Health and Welfare Committee: In the last couple months, Richard Deacon lost his father and just lately Mike Marshall lost his father. A card was purchased for the two families with condolences on behalf of the union. We have some guide lines to follow in regards to welfare. If any member of your immediate family has to go to the hospital for an overnight stay, a gift will be purchased for that person. This includes any member family having a new born. Please inform the committee, contact info on web site HEAL TH AND SAFETY Someone somewhere formulated the adage "Charity begins at home ". Let's change that a little and state "Safety begins at home. You see where I am going here, yes HEALTH & SAFETY begins at home. If you don't and get seriously injured, how long are you going to miss work and at what cost Injuries around the home or family activities can be a burden on everyone; Family, Peers at work, your superiors, your work group etc. Did I mention you are unable to work? The fall season will soon be on us with shorter days and the sun might be shining but under the leaves on the ground, it is still wet and quite slippery. Even after the leaves get blown into the recessions, looking level with the rest of the field. This is where one must be diligent and plan ones patrol and slow down after sunset. Would you say a bear can see your flashlight long before you bump into it. Do you hear a humming; are there electrical wires down near by? Slips, trips, sprained ankles and falls are our number one most frequent health claim in our industry not to mention most costly. We routinely go to work without ever thinking we might not return home alive. We never plan on slipping, tripping or be electrocuted. As insignificant safely. as it may seem, safety is not an accident. 2 Message from the President I would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to our newest members of Local 818. As the base continues to expand and grow with military commitments so will our organization as per our collective agreement. To date, we have had good response to members providing contact information assisting your executive in efforts to keep everyone informed. I ask any member of the bargaining unit who has not provided an address or signed a union membership card to contact one of the executive to do so. Ever person working upon base IS paying 1.5% union dues for every hour worked. To not be a registered card carrying member makes no sense since your paying for assistance and the protection of the collective agreement anyway. Anyone who has not filled the application for Free $ life insurance PSAC provides all registered members, please contact us soonest. Would like to remind our members of the following: Union = is by definition a number of persons joined or associated together for the same common purpose, promoting unity within the work place, of being united and becoming an adherent state of being one with equality with your peers Having said that I would like to implore our members to remember" that we are all working or should be, for one common goal. Every member of our association should hope to be treated equally not only by their superiors but most importantly by our peers. Regardless of which site you represent, you are an integral component of that detachment. It's imperative that every member of all detachments are given the full degree of respect and afforded the same terms of equality as per the collective agreement. It is no longer acceptable for some members to be given special treatment by site supervisor's that's not available to all. YOUR collective agreement plainly states scheduling and all other requirements of our work. Honour, Integrity and Professionalism should govern all aspects of our job. If we cannot work together, stand united and respect your peers we will never make our Employer respect US! To date we still have a small number of members who feel entitled to more, feel they are above the rules negotiated within the CA and are subject to favouritism by some supervisors. The rest of you have rights! Its time to stand up, get involved, ensure your rights are observed and help your executive stop P, erentiajjeatment. 3 Report of the Chief Steward To-date 30 grievances have been submitted for this year. All grievances that have been denied at levels I and II have been forwarded to PSAC for arbitration. 15 grievances are presently at arbitration. In the past three months, a number of grievances have been resolved at either level I or II in favour of the union. As a result of open communications between management and the union, both sides are garnishing a better understanding of the Collective Agreement and progress is being made toward improving working conditions. Should you have any questions or concerning regarding the Collective Agreement, please contact your steward.
4 Group Registered Retirement Savings Plan Commissionaires (Kingston & Region Division) offer a Corpsshared Group Registered Retirement Savings Plan to all employees after they have successfully completed their probationary period. It is a voluntary plan where bi-weekly contributions are deducted from a commissionaire's pay. The minimum bi-weekly contribution required to join the plan is $ While the employee is contributing to the plan, the Division will also contribute 1.50% of gross earnings each day, to a maximum contribution of $ annually. Commissionaires are encouraged to plan for retirement by leaving all contributions in the plan, however if commissionaires wish to withdraw money from the plan at any time they may do so with their own contributions only. Contributions from the Corps will only be released to the member through the 'homebuyers plan', 'educational plan' or upon resignation.
