6 DONORS WELFARE PLAN RANCHO SAN ANTONIO BOYS HOME For over 75 years, Rancho San Antonio Boys Home has addressed contemporary social problems of young men in the Foster Care System. Upon leaving the system, resources and support are limited and they do not have the life skills training to meet the demands of independent living. When foster care graduates cannot meet basic living requirements they often drift into the welfare system, homelessness, or resort to criminal activity. At the time of discharge from the foster care system, these young men need work, education, and adult based life skills training in order to be successful. Youth in foster care are about half as likely to have graduated with a high school diploma by the age of 20. do not have a viable home resource. Our goal is to provide a continuum of services for young men over the age of 18 and who have limited resources and need to develop independent living skills. The THP s mission is to create a healthy and nurturing environment whereby the residents grow into independent, responsible young men, who are able to enter the community with a support system and accessibility to resources that will assist in their personal growth. The key elements of Rancho s THP are: life skills training, employment, job training, and continued education. The goal is to leave our program prepared and with the hope and confidence in themselves to succeed. In an effort to respond to this growing need, Rancho offers a Transitional Housing Program (THP) for foster youth that 4 ASSOCIATION REPORT

20 AT THE MOVIES CAPTAIN PHILLIPS By Marie De La Riva The 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama marked the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years. This film, based on that incident, takes us from the comfort of hearth and home in the USA to the terror of hijacking, threats, and mortal danger. It begins quietly enough in the study of Captain Phillips Vermont home. He is preparing for his flight to take command of the Maersk Alabama on the other side of the world in Oman. In what becomes the pattern of the suspense that builds to an excruciating climax, routine actions or scenes are interspersed with flashes of the danger to come. We see him read notices of pirate activity in the area of his destination seemingly with little reaction. As he rushes through the routine of packing, passport, papers, bag and backpack, his wife, dressed in scrubs, also hurries to join him for the trip to the airport and then to her workplace. Just another day to all appearances, they converse about their children and the different world they will face compared to the one their parents grew up in. He reassures her, Everything will be okay. They will be okay. That scene is the last truly calm time in the film. The pirate activity cited in the notices provided to shipping companies and their crews at the time consisted of five previous attacks on vessels within a week by pirates who had previously extorted ransoms in the tens of millions of dollars. As Captain Phillips arrives on the ship he begins taking stock of its condition and crew, an obviously routine activity but it takes an ominous turn as we realize the sheer size of the vessel offers multiple opportunities for attack. We are introduced to the pirates as we are shown a desolate village on the dunes of the Somali coast. Impoverished men line up on the beach as in a hiring hall jostling for position and a chance to work. A lieutenant of the local warlord scolds them for not working hard enough and demands the local elder do more or no one eats. Muse is one of the captains selecting a crew to man his boat. Thin with an intense glare, Muse chooses three men including one very young boy. With this the men pile into flimsy skiffs and set off into the shipping lanes. The captain orders a drill after his inspection and though the crew regards the new captain as a bit of a hard case, they spring into action and run through the required steps. The shipping companies have initiated protocols in preparation for not only fire and natural dangers but also for hostile attacks. However, those protocols do not include arming the crew or providing an armed security force on board. It is during the drill that the initial attack by two pirate boats is attempted and successfully repelled. The Somalis are desperate men though and while one boat turns back, Muse and his crew do not. Driven by the prospect of millions in ransom and fueled by the Khat leaves they chew for energy, they return and manage to board the ship. Rather than spoil the movie for you, suffice to say that we are held in suspense for the fate of the Captain and his crew for much of the length of the film. The Captain and crew show spirit and ingenuity in their efforts to stymie the pirates and protect themselves. A loyalty and dedication to each other is obvious even in their disagreements over method or tactics. The suspense extends even when the US Navy and Seal Team Six come into the fray. Up to the end, it is not quite clear that everything will be okay after all. Captain Phillips is definitely worth the price of admission and a heck of a ride from beginning to end. Other than Tom Hanks, a mostly unknown cast but some familiar faces comprise the cast of character actors portraying ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events. 18 ASSOCIATION REPORT

24 RECIPES MAMA S EGGNOG Recipe courtesy of Paula Deen INGREDIENTS: 6 egg, separated* 3/4 cup sugar 1 pint heavy cream 4 pints milk 1/2 pint Bourbon 1 tablespoon vanilla Nutmeg DIRECTIONS: In a bowl beat the egg yolks with the 1/2 cup of sugar until thick. In another bowl beat the egg whites with 1/4 cup of sugar until thick. In a third bowl beat the cream until thick. Add the cream to the yolks, fold in the egg whites, and add the milk, Bourbon, vanilla, and a pinch of nutmeg, if desired. Chill in freezer before serving. Serve eggnog in a large punch bowl. *RAW EGG WARNING Food Network Kitchens suggest caution in consuming raw and lightly-cooked eggs due to the slight risk of Salmonella or other food-borne illness. To reduce this risk, we recommend you use only fresh, properly-refrigerated, clean, grade A or AA eggs with intact shells, and avoid contact between the yolks or whites and the shell. EGGNOG-PANETTONE BREAD PUDDING Recipe courtesy of Rachael Ray INGREDIENTS: 1 loaf panettone, available in Italian specialty stores, cut in half (enough for about 5 cups, diced) 3 whole eggs 3 egg yolks 3/4 cups sugar 2 cups half-and-half 1/4 cup rum 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg Vegetable cooking spray DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 475 degrees F. Place a tea-kettle of water on to boil for a water bath. With a serrated knife, remove the side crusts from the half piece of the panettone. Cut into 3/4 to 1-inch dice. You should have 5 cups. Reserve the cubed panettone in a large mixing bowl. For the eggnog custard, in another bowl thoroughly whisk together the eggs, yolks, sugar, half and half, rum, vanilla extract, and a healthy grating of fresh nutmeg. Pour this over the bread cubes. Spray a 12 hole muffin tin with vegetable cooking spray. Ladle the bread/eggnog mixture gently and evenly into the muffin tins. The big cubes sticking up look nice. Place the filled muffin tin in a tall sided cookie sheet or roasting pan. Transfer to the preheated oven and carefully pour the hot water from kettle onto sheet pan, creating a water bath for the muffin tin to sit in. Bake 15 to 20 minutes until the tops are nicely browned, and a toothpick comes clean from the center. Bread pudding may be served warm or cold. Vanilla Ice cream or whipped cream would be great accompaniments. 22 ASSOCIATION REPORT

Next, help your elf apply a thin line of hot glue to one edge of the magnetic frame s clear front and firmly press the foam frame in place. Repeat with the remaining edges, one at a time, being careful not to glue over the pocket s opening. Your child can then trim the frame as she likes, making sure to leave a margin of foam sufficient to cover the outer edge of the magnetic frame. She can also glue on decorative accessories, then slip a favorite photo into the pocket.
